Google Pixel 4 XL Display Assembly Replacement

This guide is not endorsed by Google. Follow it at your own risk.

  • This repair will replace only the display assembly, not the entire phone's internals.
  • If replacing a display assembly attached to a frame, use the alternative guide instead.

You'll need replacement adhesives for both the back panel and display panel before starting.

  • Remove the back panel.
  • Disconnect the display connector.

This repair will likely destroy your phone's display assembly due to OLED sensitivity to oxygen and moisture.

Be aware of potential exposure to invisible infrared laser emissions when handling the front laser assembly.

Step 1 | Remove the SIM card tray

Ejecting the SIM card tray may cause data loss if not done properly.

  • Insert a SIM eject tool, SIM bit, or a straightened paper clip into the small hole on the SIM card tray on the left edge of the phone.
  • Press firmly to eject the tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray from the phone.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Step 2 image

Apply heat to the back panel's bottom edge using an iOpener for 1 minute.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Be cautious not to overheat the phone and cause damage to the display or internal battery.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Step 3 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back panel by pressing down firmly to create suction.

  • Position it as close to the edge as possible for maximum grip.
  • Optional: Cover badly cracked glass with clear packing tape for better suction.

If neither method works, use superglue to secure the suction cup in place.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply strong, steady force upwards with the suction cup.

  • If needed, reapply heat to loosen the edge.
  • Once a gap forms, insert the opening pick into it carefully.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert an opening pick at the bottom edge and slide it towards the left corner.

  • Slice the adhesive by sliding the pick along the bottom edge, starting at the left corner.
  • With the pick still in place, continue to slice the adhesive by sliding it from the left to the right corner.

Leave the pick inserted in the right corner to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Step 6 image

Apply iOpener to the left edge of the phone for exactly 1 minute.

Step 7

Step 8

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert an opening pick into the bottom left corner.

  • Slice along the left side of the phone using a gentle sawing motion.
  • The adhesive may be gummy; push the pick in and out as needed to help it slice smoothly.

Continue until you reach the top left corner, near the camera, then leave the pick inserted.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Step 9 image

Never apply excessive heat — risk of damage to phone components.

  • Heat a section of the iOpener until the glass is pliable (approximately 1 minute).
  • Apply the heated iOpener along the right edge of the phone for one minute.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 2

Swing open the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone.

  • Be mindful of the attached ribbon cable when positioning the panel.
  • During reassembly, power on your phone and test all functions before sealing it up.
  • Power down your phone completely before continuing work.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Step 14 image

This process will likely destroy the OLED display panel; only proceed if replacing a broken assembly.

  • Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the display, or use strong tape instead for cracked displays.
  • If necessary, apply heat and try again for difficult separations.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap created by pulling up on the suction cup with strong force.
  • If initial separation is hard, reapply heat and increase force as needed.

Step 40 | Thread the display connector through the frame

Step 40 image

Separate the display assembly by sliding the display connector out of its slot near the motherboard.

  • Tilt the display assembly gently from side to side if necessary, to help the connector clear the phone's frame.
  • The connector should slide out smoothly without applying any force.

Step 41 | Remove the display assembly

Step 41 image

Remove the display assembly.

  • Thread the replacement assembly's display cable through the motherboard cutout
  • If trouble persists, consider loosening and partially removing the motherboard
