Google Pixel 4 XL Charging Assembly Replacement

Google warns that disassembly of the front laser assembly could result in hazardous exposure to invisible infrared laser emissions.

Do not reuse the battery if it has been deformed or damaged — replace it with a new one to avoid safety hazards.

  • Remove the loudspeaker, compromising its ingress gasket in the process.

  • Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or a straightened paper clip into the small hole on the SIM card tray on the left edge of the phone.
  • Press firmly to avoid damage — risk of bending the ejector tool.

  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Step 2 image

Risk of overheating and damaging the display or internal battery.

  • Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the bottom edge of the back panel for one minute.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate but avoid overheating the phone.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Step 3 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Press the suction cup onto the heated edge of the back panel, as close to the edge as possible.

If the back glass is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape before proceeding.

  • Alternatively, use very strong tape in place of the suction cup.
  • If necessary, superglue the suction cup to the broken panel.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply suction cup with firm, steady force to create a gap between back panel and frame.

Difficulty may vary by phone age; if struggling, increase edge heat before retrying.

  • Insert opening pick point into the newly created gap.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert an opening pick at the bottom edge and gently pry along the left corner.

  • Slide the pick across to the right, slicing through the remaining adhesive on the bottom side.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Step 6 image

Apply iOpener to the left edge of the phone for 1 minute.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Place a second opening pick under the back panel, positioned over the charge port.

  • Move the pick downwards and to the left, reaching the bottom left corner of the phone.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert an opening pick at the bottom left corner of the phone.

  • Slice the adhesive along the left side of the phone by moving the pick across it in a sawing motion.
  • The adhesive may be gummy, so continue pushing the pick in and out to aid in slicing.
  • Stop when you reach the top left corner near the camera, leaving the pick inserted.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Step 9 image

Apply iOpener to the right edge of the device for 1 minute.

Step 10

Step 10 image

  • Insert a new opening pick at the lower part of the righthand side.
  • Slide it up towards the top, cutting the adhesive on the right side.
  • Stop when reaching the top right corner to avoid damaging components.

  • Leave the pick in place for now.

Step 11 | Slice the top-side adhesive

Step 11 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert the third opening pick into the top right corner and slide it along the top edge to cut the last piece of adhesive.

Step 12 | Lift up the back panel

Step 12 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Carefully lift the right edge of the back cover, opening it like a book.

Do not attempt to remove the panel entirely at this stage — internal connections remain intact.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Thumbnail 2

Continue swinging open the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone.

Avoid putting stress on the attached ribbon cable.

  • Power on your phone and test all functions before sealing the back panel.
  • Ensure your phone is powered down completely before continuing work.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Step 14 image

Remove the four T3 Torx screws securing the battery connector shield:

  • One 1.8 mm screw
  • One 4.1 mm screw
  • One 4.4 mm shouldered screw
  • One 4.0 mm shouldered screw

Keep track of each screw and ensure it goes back to its original location.

Avoid damaging the battery with a spudger

  • Pry up the battery connector using the pointed end of a spudger.

When re-attaching press connectors:

  • Align carefully and press one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other.
  • Avoid pressing the middle to prevent pin damage.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Use the flat end of a spudger to gently fold the battery cable away from potential contact points.

Step 18 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Step 18 image

Remove the T3 Torx driver to take out the two 4.1mm screws securing the back panel connector cover.

Step 21 | Remove the back panel

Step 21 image

Remove the back panel.

  • For custom-cut adhesives, refer to the reassembly guide
  • If using a pre-cut adhesive card, follow this guide instead.

Step 22 | Remove the battery's adhesive pull tabs

Step 22 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Use blunt tweezers to lift up the battery adhesive pull tabs, allowing for easier grip with fingers.

  • The battery has three separate stretch adhesive strips connected to a single black pull tab.
  • To remove, cut the notched black pull tab and then gently pull each strip out individually.

Step 23

Step 23 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Hold the pull tab at a shallow angle and apply steady force.

  • If the adhesive grows long, roll it around a spudger and continue pulling.
  • Continue to pull with constant force, rotating the spudger occasionally to keep the exposed tab short.
  • Be prepared for significant force may be required, and take care not to snap the tab in half.

For stubborn adhesives, slowly apply high concentration isopropyl alcohol under each pull tab's edge, allowing it to weaken the adhesive before continuing.

  • Proceed with this method for all three pull tabs, removing them either successfully or after they snap in half.

Step 24 | Remove the battery

Step 24 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Do not insert the opening pick near the charge port flex cable.

  • Insert an opening pick on the upper right edge of the battery to slice the adhesive underneath.
  • Dislodge the battery using the opening pick, even if all adhesive pull tabs are removed.

Step 25

Step 25 image

Thumbnail 2

Replace a deformed or damaged battery with a new one to avoid safety hazards.

  • Lift the battery up, away from the phone to remove it.

Installing a replacement battery:

  • Battery well cleaning: Remove any remaining adhesive.
  • Adhesive preparation:
    • If using stretch release, apply to the battery. Otherwise, use double-sided tape or pre-cut strips in the phone's battery well, avoiding the charge port flex cable.
    • Peel away any tape liners to expose the adhesive.
  • Battery positioning: Temporarily re-connect the battery connector to the motherboard socket for proper alignment.
  • Final installation: Lay the battery in place and press firmly, then disconnect the battery connector from its socket.

Step 26 | Remove the loudspeaker

Step 26 image

Remove three T3 Torx screws:

  • One 4.1 mm screw
  • One 2.7 mm screw
  • One 4.4 mm shouldered screw

Step 27

Step 27 image

Use tweezers to carefully remove the loudspeaker.

  • Check the condition of the adhesive gasket:
    • If it's in good condition, re-use it but ensure it doesn't cover the exit hole.
    • If it's out of place, remove and replace with a pre-cut strip or Tesa tape.

Step 28 | Disconnect the charging cable connector

Step 28 image

Remove the display connector cover using a T3 Torx driver.

  • Four 3.5 mm screws need to be removed.
