Google Pixel 4 XL Battery Replacement

Discharging your battery below 25% reduces the risk of a thermal event if damaged during repair.

  • Remove the worn battery from your Google Pixel 4 XL using this guide.

If your battery is swollen, take necessary precautions to avoid injury.

Caution: Do not disassemble the front laser assembly without reading and following Google's safety warnings on invisible infrared laser emissions.

Note: The SIM card tray does not need to be ejected for this procedure. Photos in this guide show it ejected for illustrative purposes only.

Step 1 | Heat the back panel glass

Step 1 image

Apply heat using an iOpener to the bottom edge of the back panel for 1 minute.

  • Alternative methods: use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be careful not to overheat the phone.
  • The display and internal battery are susceptible to heat damage.

Be cautious when applying heat to avoid damaging sensitive components.

Step 2 | Apply a suction cup

Step 2 image

Apply a suction cup as close as possible to the heated edge of the back panel.

  • Press down on the suction cup firmly to create suction.
  • If the glass is badly cracked, apply clear packing tape to help the suction cup adhere.

Use strong tape or superglue as a last resort to secure the suction cup to the broken panel.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 2

Apply suction cup with steady force to create gap between back panel and frame.

  • If old phone, may need extra heat and multiple attempts.
  • Insert opening pick into created gap.

Step 4 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 3

Slide a opening pick across the bottom towards the left corner to slice the adhesive.

  • With the pick still inserted, slide it from the bottom left corner over to the bottom right corner to completely slice the bottom side adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in the bottom right corner to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 5 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Step 5 image

Apply a iOpener to the left edge of the device for 1 minute.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Insert a second opening pick under the back panel, positioning it above the charge port.

  • Slide the opening pick down and towards the bottom left corner of the phone.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Slide the opening pick around the bottom left corner and across the left side of the phone to slice the adhesive.

The adhesive can be very gummy; push the pick in and out in a sawing motion to help with slicing.

Stop when you reach the top left corner, near the camera, and leave the pick inserted.

Step 8 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Step 8 image

Never touch any electrical components — risk of electric shock.

  • Heat the right edge of the phone with a iOpener for exactly one minute.

Step 9

Insert a third pick at the lower right side.

  • Slide the pick up towards the top of the phone.
  • Slice the right side's adhesive until you reach the top right corner.

Be careful not to damage any cables near the top right corner.

Step 10 | Slice the top-side adhesive

Step 10 image

Slide the third opening pick to the top right corner of the phone, then work it across the top edge, carefully slicing the remaining adhesive.

  • Target the corner and edge where adhesive remains.
  • Continue along the top side until all adhesive is cut through.

Step 11 | Lift up the back panel

Step 11 image

Thumbnail 3

Carefully lift the right edge of the back cover to open it like a book.

Do not attempt to remove the panel completely at this stage as it remains connected to the phone.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Continue swinging open the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone.

Be careful not to put any stress on the attached ribbon cable.

  • Power on your phone and test all functions during reassembly.
  • Turn off your phone completely before continuing work.

Step 13 | Disconnect the battery

Step 13 image

Remove the T3 Torx screws:

  • 1.8 mm screw (not shouldered)
  • 4.1 mm screw
  • 4.4 mm shouldered screw
  • 4.0 mm shouldered screw

Keep track of each screw for proper reassembly.

Never puncture the battery with a spudger

  • Pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard using the pointed end of a spudger.
  • To reattach: align and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other side.
  • Do not press in the middle to avoid bending pins and causing permanent damage if the connector is misaligned.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Fold the battery cable over using the flat end of a spudger to prevent accidental contact.

Step 17 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Step 17 image

Remove the T3 Torx driver and use it to take out the two 4.1 mm screws that secure the back panel connector cover.

Step 19

Use the pointed end of a spudger to carefully pry up the back panel connector.

Risk of damage to surrounding components if not done gently.

Step 20 | Remove the back panel

Step 20 image

Remove the back panel.

  • For custom-cut adhesives, follow this guide during reassembly.
  • If using a pre-cut adhesive card, refer to this guide.

Step 21 | Remove the battery's adhesive pull tabs

Step 21 image

Thumbnail 2

Use blunt tweezers to lift up the battery adhesive pull tabs for easier handling.

  • The three stretch adhesive strips are connected to a single black pull tab.
  • To remove, cut the black pull tab at the notch and pull each strip out individually.

Step 22

Step 22 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply steady force to the black pull tab, pulling at a shallow angle.

  • If the adhesive grows long, roll it around a spudger and continue pulling.
  • Continue pulling with constant force, occasionally spinning the spudger to minimize exposed tab length.
  • Be prepared for a lot of force, as these tabs can snap in half.

  • Pull slowly and carefully, especially when the adhesive is not stretching.

Optionally, apply 2-3 drops of high concentration isopropyl alcohol under each pull tab to weaken the adhesive. Wait 1 minute before continuing.

These steps may need to be repeated for all three pull tabs.

Step 23 | Remove the battery

Step 23 image

Thumbnail 3

Do not touch the charge port flex cable — risk of damage.

  • Insert an opening pick on the upper right edge of the battery.
  • Slice the adhesive underneath with the opening pick.

Use the opening pick to dislodge the battery, even if all tabs were removed successfully.

Step 24

Step 24 image

Never reuse a deformed or damaged battery — replace it with a new one for safety.

Lift the battery up, away from the phone to remove it.

  • Remove any remaining adhesive from the battery well.
  • For stretch release adhesive: Apply to the battery. Otherwise, use double-sided tape or pre-cut strips, avoiding the charge port flex cable.
  • Peel away tape liners to expose the adhesive.

Temporarily re-attach the battery connector for proper positioning.

  • Lay the battery in place and press firmly.
  • Disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard socket.
