Google Pixel 4 XL Back Panel Replacement

This guide covers removing or replacing the back glass panel on your Google Pixel 4 XL, which houses critical components like the wireless charging coil, LED flash, and NFC hardware.

  • Replacement parts without preinstalled components will require part transfer from the original panel.
  • The back glass panel must be removed to access internal components.

Step 1 | Remove the SIM card tray

Locate the small hole on the SIM card tray at the left edge of the phone.

  • Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or straightened paper clip into the hole.
  • Press firmly to release the SIM card tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Be cautious of overheating when using a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.

  • Prepare an iOpener by applying it to the bottom edge of the back panel for one minute.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but avoid overheating and damaging the display or internal battery.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back panel by pressing down.

  • To create suction, press the suction cup as close to the edge as possible.
  • If the glass is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Alternatively, use very strong tape instead of a suction cup.

If all else fails, superglue may be used to secure the suction cup, but be cautious not to damage other components.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Apply suction cup firmly with steady force to create a gap between back panel and frame.

Difficulty may vary depending on phone age; reapply heat as needed if trouble persists.

  • Insert opening pick into the created gap.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Insert an opening pick at the bottom center.

  • Slide the pick across the bottom towards the left corner to slice the adhesive.
  • Move the pick from the bottom left corner over to the bottom right corner, slicing the remaining adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place at the bottom right corner to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Prepare an iOpener.

  • Apply the iOpener to the left edge of the phone.
  • Leave it in place for exactly one minute.

Insert the second opening pick underneath the back panel, positioning it directly over the charge port.

  • Slide the opening pick to the bottom left corner of the phone.

Slide an opening pick along the bottom left edge of the phone, then across the left side, using a gentle sawing motion.

  • The adhesive may be very sticky; push the pick in and out to help it slice through.
  • Stop when the pick reaches the top left corner, near the camera, and leave it inserted.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Heat a iOpener and apply it to the right edge of the phone for 1 minute.

  • Insert a third opening pick on the lower part of the righthand side.
  • Slide it up towards the top, slicing the adhesive on the right side.
  • Stop at the top right corner and leave it inserted.

Step 11 | Slice the top-side adhesive

Insert the third opening pick at the top right corner of the phone.

Move it gently across the top edge, carefully releasing the remaining adhesive.

Step 12 | Lift up the back panel

Carefully lift the right edge of the back cover, opening it like a book.

Do not attempt to remove the panel fully at this stage — it remains connected to the phone.

Continue swinging open the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone.

  • Avoid putting stress on the attached ribbon cable.
  • During reassembly, power on your phone and test functions before continuing.
  • Power down your phone completely before proceeding further.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Remove the four T3 Torx screws securing the battery connector shield:

  • 1.8 mm T3 Torx
  • 4.1 mm T3 Torx
  • 4.4 mm shouldered T3 Torx
  • 4.0 mm shouldered T3 Torx

Keep track of each screw for reassembly.

Remove the battery connector shield with a pair of tweezers.

Never puncture the battery with a spudger.

  • Pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard using the pointed end of a spudger.
  • To reattach, align and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other; avoid pressing the middle.

Use the flat end of a spudger to carefully fold the battery cable out of the way.

Step 18 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Remove the T3 Torx driver and use it to unscrew the two 4.1 mm screws.

  • The screws secure the back panel connector cover.

Remove the back panel connector cover with a pair of tweezers.

Use the pointed end of a spudger to carefully pry up and release the back panel connector.

Step 21 | Remove the back panel

Remove the back panel.

  • For pre-cut adhesive cards, follow the specific installation instructions provided with your part.
