Google Pixel 3a Screen Replacement

The Pixel 3a's screen is easily damaged due to its unreinforced design.

  • Verify that your Pixel has a cracked or broken display before proceeding.

Identify two seams on the phone:

  • Screen seam: Separate screen from phone; pry here.
  • Frame seam: Held by screws, do not pry.

Do not damage screen flex cable.

  • Avoid prying beyond the adhesive perimeter without angling your pick to prevent display panel damage.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Apply heat to the right edge of the display using an iOpener for 1 minute.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer to heat the edge until it feels hot to the touch.

Step 3

Position the suction cup near the right edge of the screen.

Apply strong steady force to create a gap; stubborn adhesives may require additional effort.

  • If initial attempts fail, heat the edge and re-attempt.
  • Insert the pick into the created gap, not exceeding 1 mm depth.

Step 4

Careful not to damage the OLED panel.

  • Insert the pick 1 mm into the gap, pivot upwards at a steep angle.
  • Pivot the pick until it slides in about 6 mm below the OLED panel.
  • If you feel resistance, stop and adjust the pick's angle to avoid pressing against the edge of the OLED panel.

Step 5

Slide the pick along the right edge, cutting through the adhesive.

Do not insert the pick more than 1/4" (6 mm) or you may damage the screen's flex cable.

  • Leave a pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Insert the pick no more than 1/4" (6 mm) into the phone's bottom edge.

  • Slide the pick around the bottom right corner to slice through the adhesive.
  • If the corner feels hard, apply a heated iOpener for a minute and try again.
  • Continue slicing along the bottom edge and around the left corner.

Insert a splintering pick into the left edge of the phone, angled so that it's below the OLED panel. Insert no more than 6 mm.

  • Insert the point of the pick 1 mm in, then angle it upwards.
  • Slowly push the pick in another 5 mm (6 mm total).

Carefully hinge open the right edge of the screen.

Do not remove the screen, as it is still attached by a flex cable near the left edge.

  • Use an opening pick to carefully cut through any remaining adhesive.

Peel the black tape covering the screen connector bracket.

  • If the tape is still usable, set it aside for reassembly.
  • Otherwise, replace with a piece of electrical tape.

Remove the two T3 screws, each 4.4 mm long.

Be careful not to strip the screw heads.

  • Remove the screen connector bracket.

Step 12

Be cautious when disconnecting connectors like the screen flex cable to avoid dislodging nearby components.

  • Use a spudger point to gently pry up and release the screen flex cable connector.
  • When re-attaching, carefully align the connector and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other side. Avoid pressing the middle.

Remove the screen.

  • Compare your replacement screen with your original part to ensure compatibility and identify components that need transfer (e.g., speaker mesh).

During boot-up after reassembly, do not touch the screen during calibration sequence to avoid touch issues.

Reinstallation varies based on adhesive type:

  • If using custom-cut adhesives, follow this guide.
  • If using double-sided tape (e.g., Tesa tape), follow this guide.
