Google Pixel 3a Loudspeaker Replacement

This repair guide was created by iFixit staff and has not been endorsed by Google.

  • This guide shows how to remove and replace the loudspeaker in a Pixel 3a.
  • Loudspeaker removal tip: A corner of the speaker is pinned under the right squeeze sensor's support bracket. You can either loosen the bracket to wiggle it out, or
  • remove the motherboard and support bracket first for better access.

The Pixel 3a has a fragile display panel; when reusing the screen, carefully follow the opening procedure's warnings.

  • Re-attaching the proximity sensor connector requires patience and finesse. Be prepared to retry if necessary.

Step 1 | Screen

Thumbnail 3

Locate the two seams on your phone:

  • The screen seam separates the screen from the rest of the phone; this is where you should start prying.
  • The frame seam, held in place by screws, is not where you should pry.

Do not risk damaging the display panel by prying beyond the narrow adhesive perimeter without angling your pick carefully.

  • Be mindful of the screen flex cable; do not pry deeper than instructed to avoid damage.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Apply heat to the right edge of the display using either an iOpener heated for 1 minute or a hair dryer until the edge is hot to the touch.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 3

Locate a suction cup near the right screen edge.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong steady force.
  • Heat the edge if the adhesive is stubborn and won't yield, then try again.
  • Insert a pick into the created gap, not exceeding 1 mm depth.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 3

Before slicing long edges, ensure the pick is inserted without damaging the OLED panel.

  • Pivot the pick upwards at a steep angle with 1 mm in the gap.
  • With the pick angled as such, carefully push it into the gap about 6 mm (1/4").
  • The pick should slide below the OLED panel. Stop if you feel the point hitting a ridge.
  • If the pick is pressing against the edge of the OLED panel, adjust its angle and try again.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert the pick no deeper than 1/4" (6 mm) to avoid damaging the screen's flex cable.

  • Slide the pick along the right edge, cutting through the adhesive.
  • Leave a pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert the pick no more than 1/4" (6 mm) into the gap.

  • Slide the pick around the bottom right corner to cut through the adhesive.
  • If the corner is difficult to slice, apply a heated iOpener for one minute and try again.
  • Continue cutting along the bottom edge and round the left corner.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert a spudger into the left edge of the phone, angling it below the OLED panel, with the tip no more than 1 mm deep.

  • Hold the spudger vertically and slowly push it inwards, making sure not to press too hard on the screen.
  • The pick should be inserted no more than 1/4" (6 mm) into the phone.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Keep the pick at least 8 mm inside the top edge when slicing.

  • Slice along the top edge of the component using a pick.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Thumbnail 2

Do not remove the screen — it's still attached via a flex cable.

  • Open the right edge of the screen using care.
  • Insert an opening pick to carefully cut remaining adhesive.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 3

Flip the attached screen upside-down, resting it on the phone.

  • The screen flex cable should remain loosely arched.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Peel off the black tape covering the screen connector bracket carefully.

  • If the tape is in good condition, set it aside for reassembly.
  • Otherwise, replace with a piece of electrical tape.

Remove the two T3 screws (4.4 mm long) securing the screen connector bracket.

  • Remove the screen connector bracket.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Be careful when disconnecting connectors to avoid dislodging nearby surface-mounted components.

  • Use a spudger point to pry up and release the screen flex cable.
  • To reattach, align carefully and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other side. Avoid pressing in the middle.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Remove the screen.

  • Carefully compare your replacement screen with your original part.
  • You may need to transfer additional components, such as the speaker mesh, to the new part.

The screen calibration sequence must not be interrupted. Do not touch the screen during boot-up.

Step 14 | Plastic Midframe

Step 14 image

Remove fourteen T3 screws of different lengths.

  • Twelve silver T3 screws (4.3 mm long).
  • Two black T3 screws (4.3 mm long).

Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original position.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Be careful not to damage the phone's frame or back cover.

  • Insert an opening pick into the frame seam at the bottom of the phone.
  • Slide the pick along the seam to release the plastic clips holding the midframe in place.

Step 16

Step 16 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Slide a pick along both sides to release midframe clips.

  • Lift the bottom edge of the midframe up.
  • The midframe remains connected by the fragile proximity sensor cable at top edge.

Be careful not to damage the proximity sensor cable.

Reinstall: align the midframe, and squeeze the phone's edges to snap clips back in place.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Thumbnail 3
  • Check if the proximity sensor connector has auto-disconnected after lifting the midframe.
  • Pry up and disconnect the proximity sensor connector from the motherboard using a spudger, if necessary.
  • Remove the plastic midframe.

Step 18

Step 18 image

Reconnect the proximity sensor by aligning the midframe's top edge with the phone.

  • Use a spudger to carefully align and push the connector onto the motherboard socket.
  • Alternatively, remove the sensor from the midframe and attach it directly to the motherboard first.

Be cautious when handling the proximity sensor as it is lightly adhered to the midframe.

  • Use a spudger to pry the sensor out of its recess on the midframe.
  • Remove the sensor from the midframe and attach the connector to the motherboard socket.
  • Thread the cable through the midframe, reposition the sensor, and press down with your finger to adhere it back in place.

Never touch any internal components during disassembly.

  • Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the battery connector from its motherboard socket.
  • Bend the battery flex cable slightly to prevent accidental contact with the socket.

Step 20 | USB-C Port

Step 20 image

Remove the two 3.3 mm T3 screws securing the USB-C port.

Step 21

Step 21 image
