Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or straightened paper clip into the SIM card tray hole.

  • Press the SIM eject tool into the SIM card tray hole to eject the SIM card tray.
  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Weaken the back cover's adhesive

Step 2 image

Apply heat to the iOpener and use it on the phone's bottom for 1 minute.

Step 3 | Create a gap in the seam

Step 3 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup to the heated bottom edge of the back cover. Ensure it's not mistaken for the screen side.

  • If your back cover is badly cracked, apply clear packing tape to aid adhesion.
  • Lift on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap.
  • Depending on age, this may require significant force. If struggling, reapply heat and try again.

Avoid using metal tools to pry, which can mar or shatter the glass back cover.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • If the panel won't budge, reapply heat using a hair dryer or heat gun.

Step 4 | Fingerprint cable information

Step 4 image

Avoid inserting the pick too far, which can damage the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 5 | Cut through the adhesive

Step 5 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert a pick along the bottom edge to hold open the adhesive.

  • Slice the adhesive along the bottom edge.
  • Slice around the right corner.

Step 6

Step 6 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply heat to the right edge using an iOpener.

  • Continue removing adhesive with an opening pick.
  • If the adhesive is stubborn, use a sawing motion by pushing the pick in and out.

Step 7

Step 7 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Continue heating and slicing until the entire phone perimeter is severed.

  • Leave a pick in each edge to prevent re-adhesion of adhesive.
  • When approaching the power button, insert the pick no more than halfway to avoid damaging the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 8 | Lift the left edge of the back cover

Step 8 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Carefully lift the left edge of the back cover.

Do not attempt to remove the back cover yet, as it is still attached by the fingerprint sensor cable.

  • Flip the back cover along its long axis.
  • Rest it in a way that does not strain the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 9 | Remove the screws

Step 9 image

Remove the two Phillips screws, 4.1 mm in length, securing the fingerprint connector bracket.

  • Keep track of each screw and note its original location.
  • During reassembly, avoid over-tightening these screws to prevent display damage.

Step 10 | Remove the fingerprint connector bracket

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 2

Careful not to dislodge surrounding surface-mounted components when disconnecting connectors.

  • Use the spudger point to pry up and disconnect the fingerprint connector.
  • To re-attach, align carefully and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other side. Avoid pressing the middle.

Step 12 | Remove the back cover

Step 12 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Remove the back cover.

  • For a reused back cover, clean off any adhesive residue and reapply new back cover adhesive.
