Google Pixel 3 Loudspeaker Replacement

Removing the bottom loudspeaker compromises the phone's water resistance capability.

  • Follow this guide for removal instructions.
  • This repair was authored by the iFixit staff, not endorsed by Google.

Step 1 | Weaken the back cover's adhesive

Step 1 image

Apply iOpener to the phone's bottom for 1 minute.

Wait at least a minute before proceeding, as excessive heat can cause damage.

Step 2 | Create a gap in the seam

Avoid using metal tools to pry the screen — risk of damaging the glass.

  • Apply a suction cup to the heated bottom edge of the back cover.
  • Ensure you're not mistaking the screen side for the back cover side.
  • If your back cover is severely cracked, apply clear packing tape for improved suction.
  • Lift on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap.
  • If necessary, reapply heat and try again due to potential age-related adhesion issues.

Insert an opening pick into the created gap carefully to avoid further damage.

Step 3 | Fingerprint cable information

Step 3 image

Avoid inserting the opening pick too far up, as it may damage the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 4 | Cut through the adhesive

Step 4 image

Use a tool to carefully slice the adhesive along the bottom edge of the phone.

  • Slice the adhesive around the right corner.
  • Leave a pick in the bottom edge to prevent re-sealing.

Step 5

Apply heat to the right edge using an iOpener.

  • Continue using an opening pick to slice the adhesive.
  • The adhesive can be particularly stubborn, so use a sawing motion with the pick to help it cut through.

Step 6

Continue heating and cutting around the phone's edges.

  • Leave a pick in each edge to prevent adhesive resealing.
  • When cutting above the power button, only insert the pick halfway or risk damaging the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 7 | Lift the left edge of the back cover

Carefully lift the left edge of the back cover.

Do not attempt to remove the back cover.

Flip the back cover along its long axis, resting it so that the fingerprint sensor cable is not strained.

Step 8 | Remove the screws

Step 8 image

Remove the two Phillips screws securing the fingerprint connector bracket.

  • Ensure each screw is tracked and returned to its original location.
  • During reassembly, avoid over-tightening these screws to prevent display damage.

Step 9 | Remove the fingerprint connector bracket

  • Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry the fingerprint connector bracket free from under the NFC coil.
  • Remove the now-exposed fingerprint connector bracket.

Step 10 | Disconnect the fingerprint connector

Step 10 image

Use a spudger to carefully pry up and disconnect the fingerprint connector from its socket.

  • Be cautious when handling small surface-mounted components surrounding the socket.
  • Re-attach by aligning and pressing down on one side of the connector until it clicks, then repeat for the other side.
  • Do not press down in the middle; misalignment can cause bent pins and permanent damage.

Step 11 | Remove the back cover

Remove the back cover.

  • If reusing, scrape off old adhesive with an opening tool and clean with high concentration isopropyl alcohol.
  • Apply new back cover adhesive as instructed in the provided guide.
  • For replacement back covers, inspect for correct fit, then transfer any retained parts (like the flash diffuser).

Step 12 | Remove the screws

Step 12 image
  • Locate and remove the two Phillips screws (1.9mm) using a screwdriver.
  • Next, remove the two Phillips screws (4.2mm).
  • Finally, remove the remaining Phillips screw (4.3mm).

Step 13 | Remove the charging coil

Step 13 image

Remove the wireless charging coil by lifting it out.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery cable

Step 14 image

Insert the pointed end of a spudger into the gap beside the battery press connector.

  • Pry gently to loosen the connector.
  • Once loose, carefully pull the connector away from its socket.

Locate and remove the following Phillips screws:

  • One 1.9 mm screw

Be careful not to lose the tiny grounding clip from the left screw hole.

The grounding clip installs with its contoured edge facing the left side of the phone.

Remove the small plastic insert from the right side of the USB-C port.

Reinstall this insert before screwing down the daughterboard.
