  • Replace the charging assembly for your Pixel 3, which includes the USB-C port and antenna connectors.
  • To access the charging assembly, you'll need to remove the loudspeaker first. Note that this will compromise the loudspeaker's ingress gasket.

Step 1 | Weaken the back cover's adhesive

Step 1 image

Apply iOpener to the bottom of the phone and heat for 1 minute.

Step 2 | Create a gap in the seam

Step 2 image

Never touch the screen while applying suction cup.

  • Apply a suction cup to the heated bottom edge of the back cover.
  • If back cover is badly cracked, apply clear packing tape first for better adhesion.
  • Lift with strong, steady force on suction cup to create gap; more heat may be needed for aged phones.

Do not use metal tools to pry the panel, as it will damage the glass back cover.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap created by suction cup.
  • If panel doesn't budge, apply more heat using a hair dryer or heat gun and try again.

Step 3 | Fingerprint cable information

Step 3 image

Careful not to insert the opening pick too deeply near the fingerprint sensor cable, as this may cause damage.

Step 4 | Cut through the adhesive

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert a pick under the bottom edge, carefully slicing the adhesive along this edge and around the right corner.

Leave the pick in place to prevent the adhesive from re-sealing.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply heat to the right edge using an iOpener.

  • Continue using the opening pick to slice the adhesive.
  • If the adhesive is gummy, use a sawing motion by pushing the pick in and out to help with slicing.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Continue heating and slicing around the phone's perimeter, leaving a pick in each edge to prevent re-adhesion.

  • Avoid inserting the pick more than halfway when slicing above the power button to protect the fingerprint sensor cable.

Damage to the fingerprint sensor cable can occur if the pick is inserted too deeply.

Step 7 | Lift the left edge of the back cover

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 3

Carefully lift the left edge of the back cover, being mindful of its attachment via the fingerprint sensor cable.

  • Do not attempt to remove the back cover yet.
  • Flip the back cover along its long axis and rest it so that the fingerprint sensor cable is not strained.

Step 8 | Remove the screws

Step 8 image

Remove the Phillips screws securing the fingerprint connector bracket.

  • Carefully track each screw for later reinstallation.
  • During reassembly, avoid over-tightening these screws to prevent damage to your display.

Step 9 | Remove the fingerprint connector bracket

Step 9 image

  • Slide the fingerprint connector bracket out from under the NFC coil using the pointed end of a spudger.
  • Remove the fingerprint connector bracket.

Step 10 | Disconnect the fingerprint connector

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 2

Be careful not to dislodge nearby surface-mounted components when disconnecting.

  • Use a spudger's point to pry up and release the fingerprint connector from its socket.
  • When reconnecting, carefully align the connector and press down on one side until it clicks into place.
  • Repeat this process for the other side; do not press in the middle.

Bending the pins can cause permanent damage if the connector is misaligned.

Step 11 | Remove the back cover

Step 11 image

Remove the back cover.

  • If reusing, scrape off adhesive residue from phone frame with an opening tool and clean with high concentration isopropyl alcohol.
  • Apply new back cover adhesive as described in guide.
  • If replacing, compare replacement part to original and transfer any remaining parts (e.g. flash diffuser). Follow guide for correct adhesive application.

Step 12 | Remove the screws

Step 12 image
  • Remove two Phillips screws, 1.9 mm in length.
  • Next, remove two more Phillips screws, 4.2 mm in length.
  • Lastly, take out the remaining Phillips screw, 4.3 mm long.

Step 13 | Remove the charging coil

Step 13 image

Remove the wireless charging coil by lifting it upwards.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery cable

Step 14 image

Careful not to lose the tiny grounding clip.

  • Remove four Phillips screws: one 1.9 mm, one 4.3 mm, and two 4.3 mm with thinner shanks.
  • Remove the small plastic insert from the right side of the USB-C port.
  • Remove the tiny grounding clip from the left screw hole, noting it faces the left phone edge.

Reinstall this plastic insert before screwing down the daughterboard.

Step 17 | Loosen the loudspeaker

Step 17 image

Remove the loudspeaker.

Before reusing an old loudspeaker, inspect the adhesive gasket for damage.

  • If the gasket is intact, ensure it doesn't cover the exit hole.
  • If the gasket is damaged or displaced, remove and replace the adhesive with a new pre-cut strip or Tesa tape.

Step 21 | Disconnect the blue antenna cable

Step 21 image

Thumbnail 2

Use the point of the spudger to carefully pry up and disconnect the blue antenna cable from its socket.

  • Pry gently at the point where the blue antenna cable meets the charging assembly's socket.
  • Work your way around the edge of the socket until it releases and the cable comes free.

Step 22

Step 22 image

The blue antenna cable is fragile and may break easily.

  • Use the point of a spudger to gently pry up and release the blue antenna cable from its grounding clip.
  • If the wire feels firmly clamped, push the clip open slightly with the spudger's tip and try again.

Step 23 | Disconnect the black antenna cable

Step 23 image
