  • Take precautions if your battery is swollen.
  • Remove the worn battery from your Pixel 3 device:

Step 1 | Weaken the back cover's adhesive

Step 1 image

Apply iOpener to the phone's bottom for 1 min.

Step 2 | Create a gap in the seam

Step 2 image

Apply a suction cup to the heated bottom edge of the back cover.

Ensure you have applied the suction cup to the back cover side and not the screen side.

  • If the back cover is badly cracked, apply a layer of clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Lift on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap.
  • Be prepared for significant force, as this may be necessary depending on your phone's age.

Do not use metal tools or you will risk damaging the glass back cover.

  • If the panel does not budge, apply more heat using a hair dryer or heat gun and try again.
  • Insert an opening pick into the created gap once sufficient force has been applied.

Step 3 | Fingerprint cable information

Step 3 image

Do not insert the pick too deeply — risk of damaging the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 4 | Cut through the adhesive

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 3

Use a tool to slice the adhesive along the bottom edge of the phone and around the right corner.

  • Make sure to leave a pick in the bottom edge to prevent the adhesive from re-sealing.

Step 5

Be cautious of the potentially gummy adhesive.

  • Apply heat to the right edge using an iOpener.
  • Purposefully insert and remove an opening pick while maintaining a sawing motion for effective slicing.

Step 6

Continue heating and slicing around the entire phone perimeter.

  • Leave a pick in each edge to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

When slicing above the power button, do not insert the pick more than halfway or you may damage the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 7 | Lift the left edge of the back cover

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 3

Carefully lift the left edge of the back cover.

  • The back cover is still attached by the fingerprint sensor cable.
  • Flip the back cover along its long axis and rest it to prevent strain on the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 8 | Remove the screws

Step 8 image

Remove the Phillips screws securing the fingerprint connector bracket using a screwdriver.

  • Note: There are two screws, each 4.1 mm long.
  • Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original position during reassembly.

Avoid over-tightening these screws, as it may damage your display.

Step 9 | Remove the fingerprint connector bracket

Step 9 image

Slide the fingerprint connector bracket out from under the NFC coil using the pointed end of a spudger.

  • Remove the fingerprint connector bracket.

Step 10 | Disconnect the fingerprint connector

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 2

Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the fingerprint connector from its socket.

Be careful not to dislodge surrounding components when disconnecting connectors like these.

  • To re-attach, align and press down on one side of the connector until it clicks into place.
  • Repeat on the other side; do not press in the middle.

Misaligned connectors can bend pins, causing permanent damage.

Step 11 | Remove the back cover

Remove the back cover.

Clean phone frame thoroughly before installing new or reused back cover.

  • Use an opening tool and high concentration isopropyl alcohol to scrape and clean surface.
  • If reusing back cover, remove adhesive residue and apply new back cover adhesive.
  • If installing replacement back cover, compare it with the original part and transfer remaining parts (such as the flash diffuser).

Follow instructions to correctly apply new back cover adhesive.

Step 12 | Remove the screws

Step 12 image

Locate and remove the wireless charging coil's securing screws.

  • Remove two Phillips screws of 1.9 mm diameter.
  • Remove two Phillips screws of 4.2 mm diameter.
  • Remove one Phillips screw of 4.3 mm diameter.

Step 13 | Remove the charging coil

Step 13 image

Remove the wireless charging coil by lifting it upwards.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery cable

Step 14 image

Locate the battery press connector near the right edge of the phone.

  • Pry up the battery press connector using a pointed spudger.
  • Disconnect the battery press connector from its socket.

Step 15 | Peel the black tape away from the battery

Step 15 image

Thumbnail 3

Be extremely cautious when using the spudger near the battery to avoid puncture.

  • Slide the spudger under the black tape, between the battery and motherboard.
  • Pry up the tape from the battery side by sliding the spudger along the crevice.
  • Carefully peel away the tape and fold it aside.
  • Note: The tape can be torn without affecting its function as a heat shield for the motherboard and battery.

Step 16 | Disconnect the buttons connector

Step 16 image

Thumbnail 3

Locate the buttons connector on the motherboard near the left edge.

  • Pry up the connector using the point of a spudger.
  • Disconnect the buttons connector from its socket.

Be careful not to damage the flex cable or motherboard.

  • Push the connector and its flex cable out of the way, allowing access to the battery.

Step 17 | Loosen the pull tab

Step 17 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Locate the battery pull tab on the left edge of the phone.

  • Insert a spudger under the black tab, pointing upwards.
  • Slide the spudger along the edge to loosen the pull tab from the battery.
  • The adhesive strips can be tricky to remove — consider cutting the black tab and pulling each strip out individually for easier access.

Step 18 | Remove the pull tab

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Hold the pull tab at a shallow angle and pull steadily.

  • When the adhesive forms a long strand, wind it around some tweezers tips and continue pulling.
  • If the strip breaks, use an opening pick to help pry up the battery.

Avoid prying near the flex cable under the battery to prevent damage.

You can also apply a few drops of high concentration isopropyl alcohol along the left edge of the battery using a plastic dropper or syringe, giving it one minute to loosen the adhesive before proceeding.

Step 19 | Remove the battery

Step 19 image

Thumbnail 2

Remove the battery.

Carefully pull and remove the small foam buffer block from the left edge of the battery; if it tears, use a spudger to gently pry it off.

  • Lay double-sided tape in the phone's battery well.
  • Temporarily re-connect the battery connector to the motherboard socket.
  • Peel away any tape liners and lay the battery on the adhesive; press firmly.
  • Disconnect the battery connector from its motherboard socket and resume assembly.
