Google Pixel 3 XL Wireless Charging Coil Replacement

Preventing damage to the battery is crucial; use either adhesive remover or high-concentration isopropyl alcohol to carefully detach the wireless charging coil from the battery.

  • This guide, authored by iFixit staff, details replacing the wireless charging coil in a Pixel 3 XL.
  • The wireless charging coil is heavily glued to the battery and requires gentle removal using an adhesive remover or high-concentration isopropyl alcohol.

Step 1 | Heat the edge of the back cover

Overheating may damage the display or internal battery.

  • Apply heat to the right edge of the back cover using an iOpener, a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate for 1 minute.
  • Note the locations of:
    • Adhesive patches near the bottom of the phone,
    • and the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 2 | Create a gap under the back cover

Step 2 image

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back cover, as close as possible.

  • Pull up on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap.
  • If necessary, apply heat and try again, as this may be more difficult on older phones.

Insert the point of an opening pick into the created gap.

Step 3 | Loosen the right edge adhesives

Step 3 image

Insert a opening pick along the right edge and slide it to cut through the adhesive.

The adhesive may harden as it cools; if this occurs, reapply heat to the edge for easier cutting.

  • Slice all the way through the edge.
  • Leave an opening pick in the seam to prevent the adhesive from re-sealing.

Step 4 | Heat the bottom edge of the back cover

Step 4 image

Place iOpener at the bottom edge of the back cover and heat for 1 minute.

Step 5 | Slice through the bottom adhesives

Step 5 image

Apply an opening pick to the lower right corner of the phone and continue along the bottom edge.

  • Work slowly when approaching the corner to avoid panel damage.
  • If slicing becomes difficult, reapply heat as needed.

Leave a pick in place at the edge to prevent adhesive seal from reforming.

Step 6 | Slice through the remaining edges

Step 6 image

Careful slicing along the left edge — risk of damaging the fingerprint sensor.

  • Continue heating and slicing remaining edges.
  • Retract pick if stuck, then try again.
  • Ensure cuts through adhesive near bottom and right edge.

Step 7 | Slice through the leftover adhesive

Step 7 image

Remove the back cover by gently prying up its right edge.

  • Continue with an opening pick to cut through the remaining adhesive on the edges.

Step 8 | Swing open the back cover

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 3

Swing the right edge of the back cover upwards and rest it along the left side.

Keep slack in the fingerprint sensor cable to prevent pinching.

  • Power on your phone during reassembly to test all functions.
  • Make sure your phone is powered down before proceeding with reassembly.
  • Follow this guide for installing custom-cut adhesives for the back cover.

If you replaced the fingerprint sensor, use a software tool to configure it.

Step 9 | Remove the fingerprint sensor tape

Step 9 image

Use tweezers to gently lift the yellow tape from the fingerprint sensor connector.

Step 10 | Disconnect the fingerprint sensor

Step 10 image

Be extremely cautious when handling the flex cable to avoid short circuits.

  • Use a spudger's tip to delicately lift the black lock bar on the ZIF socket.
  • Gently pull the cable out of the socket using your fingers or tweezers, taking care not to touch the metal contacts with the tweezers.

Step 11 | Remove the back cover

Step 11 image

Remove the back cover.

  • Apply new back cover adhesive as described in the provided guide.

Step 12 | Remove the metal cover bracket screws

Step 12 image

Remove the T3 screws securing the metal cover bracket.

  • Three 4mm long screws (T3)
  • One 3mm long screw (T3)

Keep track of each screw and ensure it is replaced in its original position to avoid mix-ups.

Step 13 | Remove the metal cover bracket

Step 13 image

Use a spudger to pry loose the metal bracket from its position.

  • Insert the spudger's flat end under the top right edge of the bracket.
  • Pry upwards gently until the bracket comes loose.

Be cautious not to damage surrounding components when prying up the bracket.

Once loose, remove the metal cover bracket.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Risk of short circuit: do not use metal tools on the battery connector.

  • Use a plastic spudger to gently pry up and disconnect the battery connector.
  • Bend the battery cable so it does not accidentally touch the socket.

Step 15 | Disconnect the charging coil

Step 15 image

Thumbnail 2

Locate the charging coil connector near the right edge of the phone's motherboard.

Careful not to damage nearby components.

  • Pry up the connector using the point of a spudger.
  • Gently pull the charging coil connector away from the motherboard.

Step 16 | Slice under the charging coil

Step 16 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert a corner of an opening pick under one edge of the charging coil.

  • Slide the pick along the edge to loosen the adhesive.
  • Slice as deep as possible, but carefully avoid puncturing the battery's surface.

Step 17 | Apply adhesive remover under the coil

Step 17 image

Thumbnail 2

Hold the phone at an angle with the affected edge facing up.

  • Apply a few drops of adhesive remover or high concentration isopropyl alcohol along the edge.
  • Keep the phone in this position for 1-2 minutes to soften the adhesive.

Step 18 | Slice through the coil adhesive

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert the flat end of an opening pick under a corner of the charging coil.

  • Push the pick slowly and firmly under the coil to loosen the adhesive.
  • The adhesive is mostly around the perimeter, use the opening pick to slowly slice through it.
  • If difficult, tilt the phone up and apply more adhesive remover.

Step 19 | Remove the charging coil

Step 19 image

Be very careful not to puncture the battery when cleaning.

  • Remove the wireless charging coil.
  • Clean off any adhesive residue from the battery surface.
  • Connect the wireless coil connector to its motherboard socket.
  • Peel off the adhesive backing on the replacement coil.
  • Lay the replacement coil on top of the battery and press firmly into position.
