Google Pixel 3 XL Loudspeaker Replacement

Note that removing the loudspeaker may compromise the phone's water resistance.

  • The loudspeaker module is sealed to the frame using an adhesive gasket.

Step 1 | Heat the edge of the back cover

Avoid overheating the device to prevent display and internal battery damage.

  • Apply heat to the right edge of the back cover using an iOpener or alternative heat source for at least one minute.

Be cautious not to slice through the Fingerprint sensor cable.

  • Note areas with Strong adhesive near the phone's bottom edge before proceeding.

Step 2 | Create a gap under the back cover

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back cover, as close to the edge as possible.

Use strong, steady force to pull up on the suction cup and create a gap.

  • If you're having trouble, apply heat to the edge and try again.
  • Insert the point of an opening pick into the created gap.

Step 3 | Loosen the right edge adhesives

Slide a opening pick along the right edge to slice through the adhesive.

The adhesive becomes hard to slice when cooled; apply heat to the edge if necessary to aid in slicing.

  • Slice through the entire edge with the pick.
  • Leave an opening pick in the seam to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 4 | Heat the bottom edge of the back cover

Heat the iOpener and apply it to the bottom edge of the back cover for one minute.

Step 5 | Slice through the bottom adhesives

Use an opening pick to carefully slice around the bottom right corner and continue along the bottom edge of the phone.

Work slowly to avoid cracking the panel, and re-apply heat if slicing becomes difficult.

  • Leave a pick in the edge to prevent adhesive re-sealing.

Step 6 | Slice through the remaining edges

Continue heating and slicing remaining edges.

  • Be cautious when cutting left edge — may snag fingerprint sensor.
  • If stuck, retract pick slightly and try again.

Be careful not to damage internal components.

  • Cut through thick adhesive near bottom and right edge.

Step 7 | Slice through the leftover adhesive

Pry up the right edge of the back cover with care.

  • Use a plastic spudger or an opening pick to slice through any remaining adhesive along the edges.

Step 8 | Swing open the back cover

Swing the right edge of the back cover upwards and rest it along the left side of the phone.

  • Maintain slack in the fingerprint sensor cable to prevent pinching.
  • During reassembly, power on your phone to test functions before sealing.
  • Power down your phone completely before continuing work.

  • Install custom-cut adhesives for the back cover during reassembly.

Use the software tool provided with the new fingerprint sensor to register it with your phone.

Step 9 | Remove the fingerprint sensor tape

Use tweezers to gently lift the yellow tape covering the fingerprint sensor connector.

Step 10 | Disconnect the fingerprint sensor

Prevent shorting by avoiding contact with the metal contacts on the flex cable.

  • Flip up the black lock bar on the fingerprint sensor's ZIF socket using a spudger point.
  • Gently walk the flex cable out of the socket, grasping its tab with your fingers or tweezers.

Step 11 | Remove the back cover

Be careful when handling the new adhesive.

  • Remove the back cover.
  • Apply a small amount of new adhesive according to the provided instructions.

Step 12 | Remove the metal cover bracket screws

Remove the T3 screws securing the metal cover bracket:

  • Three screws, 4 mm long.
  • Screw, 3 mm long.

Keep track of each screw to ensure it is replaced in its exact original location.

Step 13 | Remove the metal cover bracket

Locate the metal bracket and insert the flat end of a spudger under its top right edge.

  • Pry up gently with the spudger to loosen the bracket.
  • Remove the metal cover bracket.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Never use metal tools to disconnect the battery connector, as this can cause a short circuit and damage the battery.

  • Use a plastic spudger to gently pry up and disconnect the battery connector from its socket.
  • Bend the battery cable away from the socket to prevent accidental contact.

Step 15 | Disconnect the loudspeaker

Use the pointed end of a spudger to carefully pry up the loudspeaker connector from its motherboard socket, located near the bottom right edge of the device.

Step 16 | Remove the loudspeaker screws

  • Locate and remove three T3 screws with a length of 4mm.
  • Additionally, remove one more T3 screw measuring 3.9mm in length.

Step 17 | Loosen the loudspeaker

  • Place the tip of a precision opening pick at the bottom right speaker corner.
  • Slowly slide the pick inward to release the right speaker clips.

Insert a pointed opening pick at the top edge of the loudspeaker, beneath the battery.

  • Slide the opening pick inwards to cut through the adhesive gasket under the loudspeaker.

Step 19 | Remove the loudspeaker

Disconnect the loudspeaker from its mounting.

  • Lift the speaker out slowly and pull it away from any remaining adhesive.
  • Remove any residual adhesive from the frame before installing a new loudspeaker.
