This repair guide was written by iFixit staff and is not endorsed by Google. Learn more about our guides. This guide helps replace a cracked or faulty screen, including the display and digitizer on your Google Pixel 2. Transferring small parts from original to replacement may be required.

  • Inspect both displays carefully for all relevant components.

Step 1 | Opening Procedure

Before starting, wrap cracked display glass with tape for safe handling and a smooth surface.

  • Suction Cup placement: near volume button edge, avoiding the curve.
  • The cup will not seal well on curved areas.

Step 2

Do not apply excessive force to avoid damaging the OLED panel.

  • Insert an opening pick between the front panel and rear case, applying firm, constant pressure.
  • Limit the insertion depth to 1.5 mm or less to prevent damage to the OLED panel.

Using excessive force can cause harm, so consider using an iOpener, heat gun, or hair dryer to weaken the adhesive.

  • The display panel is fragile; handle with care when reusing it. Avoid inserting tools further than necessary to separate the adhesive, as this can damage the OLED panel under the glass.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Careful not to insert tools too far: risk of damaging phone's display.

  • Insert pick no more than 9mm into bottom edge; avoid folded OLED panel.
  • Make shallow cuts in upper left corner, avoiding damage to front-facing camera.
  • No deeper than 1.5mm tool insertion on sides; 9mm or more on top/bottom risks display damage.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Use the flat part of the opening pick instead of a corner to avoid going in too far.

  • Slide the opening pick up the right side of the phone to separate the display adhesive.
  • Be careful with the side bezels, which are only 1.5 mm deep.

Damage or loss of the mesh covering may require additional repair costs.

  • Insert an opening pick at the upper-right corner and slide it along the top edge.
  • Be cautious when navigating around the earpiece speaker.

Insert the opening pick into the lower-left corner of the phone and slide it along the bottom edge, keeping a slight angle away from the screen.

  • Be cautious not to exceed a depth of 9 mm to avoid damaging the OLED panel.

Step 8

Reinsert the pick at the top edge and gently pry up the display.

  • If the display doesn't lift easily, continue prying to separate the adhesive near the upper speaker.
  • Do not fully separate the display yet — a fragile ribbon cable still connects it.

Step 9

Place the display on top of the rear case, ensuring no creases or tears to the ribbon cable.

  • T5 Torx screwdriver: Remove two 4.0 mm screws securing the display cable bracket.
  • Keep track of each removed screw, labeling its original position for reinstallation.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Locate and remove the display cable bracket.

Avoid touching the motherboard with the spudger tip to prevent damage.

  • Lift the display cable connector out of its socket on the motherboard using a pointed spudger.
  • To reattach, carefully align and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side. Avoid pressing in the middle.
  • If the connector is misaligned, pins can bend, causing permanent damage.

Re-seat this connector if any part of your screen doesn't respond to touch after repair, ensuring it clicks fully into place and there's no dust or obstruction.

During reassembly, replace the display adhesive around the edges before proceeding further.

Step 12 | Screen

Step 12 image

Carefully remove speaker grilles and front-facing camera bracket from old display if they are not pre-installed on new replacement.

  • Apply heat to camera bracket before prying it away from old screen with thin metal blade.
  • Use tweezers to carefully peel both layers of speaker grille off old screen together, minimizing separation.

Make sure grilles and gasket are installed before applying display adhesive.

  • Cut two corners or four strips of double-sided adhesive to a maximum width of 1 mm and length of 12 mm (0.5 inches).
  • Apply adhesive to all four edges of camera bracket's flat side using your finger or spudger.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Ensure the camera bracket is seated correctly by placing it into its slot surrounding the front-facing camera.

  • The rounded corner of the bracket must face the upper left corner of the phone.
  • If the bracket does not sit flush with the camera, adjust and reseat it properly.

Improper seating can lead to damage or poor performance of the camera system.

  • Peel the white backing off the adhesive strips on the camera bracket.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Press down gently on one side of the display cable connector using your finger or a flat edge.

Do not press in the middle — risk of pin bending and damage.

  • Check for proper alignment before pressing down completely.
  • Repeat on the other side until it clicks securely into place.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Make sure there is no adhesive on the new screen before proceeding.

  • Install the new screen temporarily to align with the front-facing camera bracket while adhering the bracket to the screen.
  • Align the lower edge of the screen with the phone case and set it in place, hinging it down slowly.
  • Press on the front-facing camera hole to ensure the bracket is adhered to the screen.

During boot-up, do not touch the screen during calibration or you may experience touch issues.

  • Lift the screen and check that the camera bracket is adhered.
  • Disconnect the display cable after verifying proper alignment.

Step 16

Prepare a 3 cm (1.25 in) long double-sided tape with a width of 1 mm.

  • Lay the tape along the upper edge of the earpiece speaker slot, centered and touching the edge.
  • Ensure the tape does not overlap the slot's edge.

Gently press the tape into place using your finger or a spudger.

  • Repeat this process to apply an identical strip along the bottom edge of the speaker slot.
  • Peel away the white backing from both strips.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Set the speaker grille into its slot with the curved side facing inward.

Verify that the grille is centered before applying pressure.

Push the grille down onto the adhesive to secure it in place.

Step 18

Step 18 image

Use a spudger or your finger to press down speaker grille edges.

  • Press against adhesive strips.

Do not touch the screen during boot-up calibration.

  • The system will run a calibration sequence.
  • Touch issues may occur if touched during this time.
