  • Replaces the rear camera in a Google Pixel 2.
  • This repair is complex and involves removing the motherboard completely.
  • Note: While some images show the battery removed, it's not necessary to do so for this repair.

Step 1 | Opening Procedure

Tape cracked display glass to contain breakage and prevent injury.

  • Apply a smooth surface by taping the display glass.
  • Attach a suction cup near the volume button edge, avoiding curved sections.

Suction cup will not seal on curved edges of glass.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Do not insert the pick deeper than 1.5 mm or risk damaging the OLED panel.

  • Pull up on the suction cup with firm, constant pressure and insert an opening pick between the front panel and rear case.
  • Apply force and patience; if necessary, rock the suction cup and screen to weaken the adhesive, or use heat from an iOpener, heat gun, or hair dryer.

When reusing the display, take care not to insert the tool too far as this can damage the OLED panel under the glass.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Extra caution is required to avoid damaging the phone: do not insert tools too far.

  • Insert the pick no more than 9 mm into the bottom edge, as OLED panel damage can occur otherwise.
  • Only make shallow cuts in the upper left corner to avoid damaging the front-facing camera.
  • Avoid inserting tools more than 1.5 mm into sides or 9 mm into top and bottom, as this can cause permanent display damage.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Use the flat side of the opening pick, not a corner, to avoid inserting it too far.

  • Slide the opening pick along the right edge of the phone to release the display adhesive.
  • Be cautious with the side bezels; they are only 1.5 mm deep, so work carefully not to damage them.

Step 5

Slide the opening pick around the upper-right corner and along the top edge of the phone.

  • Be aware that there is a mesh covering the earpiece speaker on the top edge of the screen.
  • If you don't have a replacement, be very careful not to damage or lose this component.

Step 6

Slide the pick around the upper-left corner, then continue down the left edge of the phone.

Step 7

Insert the opening pick into the phone at the bottom-left corner.

  • Slide the pick along the bottom edge, keeping it at a slight angle away from the screen.
  • Avoid inserting the pick more than 9 mm to prevent damage to the OLED panel.

Step 8

Reinsert the pick at the top edge of the phone and gently pry up the display.

  • If necessary, perform additional prying to separate the last of the adhesive near the upper speaker.
  • Note that the adhesive here is thicker than in other areas.

Do not attempt to fully separate the display yet — a fragile ribbon cable remains connected to the motherboard.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Place the display face down on top of the rear case as shown, taking care not to damage the display ribbon cable.

  • Remove the two T5 Torx screws (4.0 mm) securing the display cable bracket.
  • Keep track of each screw and note its original position for correct reinstallation later.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Disconnect and remove the display cable bracket.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Use a spudger to lift the display cable connector from its motherboard socket.

Avoid touching the motherboard with the tip of your spudger to prevent damage to fragile components.

  • To reattach, align and press one side until it clicks; repeat on the other side. Do not press in the middle.
  • If misaligned, pins can bend causing permanent damage.

If any part of your screen doesn't respond to touch, re-seat this connector ensuring a full click and clearing any dust or obstructions.

Pause here during reassembly to replace the display adhesive around its edges.

Step 12 | Midframe

Step 12 image

Apply a iOpener to the proximity sensor on the top edge of the midframe and heat it for 2 minutes.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Slide a spudger under the proximity sensor cable, starting at the side nearest the front-facing camera.

  • Gently lift the edge of the sensor cable to rotate the sensor to be perpendicular to the midframe.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Peel back the small piece of tape covering the screw below the earpiece speaker.

Remove any additional tapes covering other screws as needed.

  • Eleven 3.7 mm Phillips screws
  • One 4 mm T5 Torx screw

Keep track of each removed screw to ensure correct reassembly.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Insert an opening tool into the notch in the midframe.

  • Pry the midframe up to create a gap between it and the phone case.
  • The midframe is not yet removable, but can be separated slightly.

Step 16

Careful not to damage the proximity sensor.

  • Lift the midframe up from the bottom edge of the phone.
  • When it reaches a 45° angle, lift straight up and away from the phone.
  • Guide the proximity sensor through its small slot in the midframe.

Step 17 | Battery Connector

Flip the motherboard over.

  • Careful not to damage any components — risk of electrical shock.

  • Disconnect the fingerprint sensor cable.
  • The motherboard is now completely detached from the phone.

Step 24 | Rear Camera

Use the pointed end of a spudger to lift up and disconnect the rear camera press-fit connector.

  • Remove the rear camera from the motherboard.
  • If your replacement camera module has a plastic spacer, remove it before installation.
  • Clean the lens surface to ensure it is smudge- and dust-free before installing the camera assembly.
