  • This repair guide is intended for removing or replacing the motherboard in a Google Pixel 2.
  • Some images show the phone with the battery removed; however, it is not necessary to remove the battery for this procedure.

Step 1 | Opening Procedure

Apply tape to cracked display glass to prevent further breakage and bodily harm.

  • Secure the glass with tape for a smooth surface, allowing the suction cup to adhere.
  • Attach a suction cup near the volume button edge, avoiding the curved section.
  • The suction cup will not seal properly on the curved portion of the display glass.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply firm, constant pressure with the suction cup and insert an opening pick between the front panel and rear case, but not deeper than 1.5 mm.

Risk of damaging the OLED panel if the pick is inserted too far.

  • Apply significant force and patience, or use heat with an iOpener, heat gun, or hair dryer to weaken the adhesive.
  • Be cautious when working with a fragile display panel.
  • To preserve the OLED panel for re-use, only insert the tool as far as necessary to separate the adhesive.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Careful handling is required to avoid damaging the phone.

  • Do not insert pick more than 9 mm into the bottom edge of the phone, as it may damage the OLED panel.
  • Make shallow cuts in upper left corner only; deep prying can harm the front-facing camera.
  • Insert opening tool no deeper than 1.5 mm on sides and 9 mm on top/bottom to avoid display damage.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Use the flat of the opening pick to cut, not a corner.

  • Slide up along the right side of the phone with an opening pick to separate display adhesive.
  • Be careful around the side bezels (only 1.5 mm deep).

Step 5

Careful handling is required for the mesh covering the earpiece speaker as it can be damaged or lost.

  • Slide the opening pick around the upper-right corner of the phone.
  • Continue along the top edge, taking care to avoid damaging the mesh.

Step 6

Avoid inserting the pick more than 9 mm into the phone.

  • Slide the pick around the bottom-left corner and along the bottom of the phone at a slight angle away from the screen.
  • Avoid damaging the OLED corners by keeping the pick angled correctly.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Reinsert the pick at the top edge and gently pry up the display.

Do not attempt to fully separate the display yet, as a fragile ribbon cable remains attached to the motherboard.

  • If the display does not lift easily, apply extra prying pressure to separate the remaining adhesive.
  • Be cautious near the upper speaker, where the adhesive is thicker.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Place the display on top of the rear case, ensuring the display ribbon cable is not damaged.

  • Remove the two 4.0 mm T5 Torx screws securing the display cable bracket.
  • Keep track of each screw for correct reinstallation.

Fragile motherboard components surrounding the socket; avoid touching with spudger tip.

  • Lift display cable connector out of its socket using the point of a spudger.
  • To reattach, align and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side. Do not press middle.
  • Misaligned connector may cause permanent damage; inspect for dust or obstructions in socket.

  • If screen doesn't respond after repair, re-seat this connector ensuring it clicks fully into place.

During reassembly, replace adhesive around display edges before proceeding.

Step 12 | Midframe

Step 12 image

Apply a heated iOpener to the proximity sensor on the top edge of the midframe for two minutes to loosen the adhesive.

Step 13

Step 13 image

  • Insert the spudger under the proximity sensor cable, near the front-facing camera.
  • Lift the edge of the sensor cable, guiding it to be perpendicular to the midframe.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Peel back any tape covering screws.

  • Remove the 3.7 mm Phillips screws (eleven).
  • Remove the 4 mm T5 Torx screw.

Keep track of each screw for reassembly purposes.

Step 15

Insert a pick into the notch near the hold button.

  • Pry the midframe up, creating a gap between it and the phone case.
  • The midframe cannot yet be completely removed.

Step 16

Lift the midframe upwards starting from the bottom edge.

Careful not to damage the proximity sensor

  • When it reaches about a 45° angle, lift it straight up and away from the phone.
  • Guide the proximity sensor through its slot in the midframe as you lift it.

Step 17 | Battery Connector
