Google Pixel 2 Front Camera Replacement

Replacement may take considerable time, plan accordingly.

  • This repair guide was written by iFixit staff and has not been endorsed by Google, learn more about our guides here.
  • If your front camera images are lagging, consider replacing the component.
  • Secure tiny screws on a magnetic project mat to keep track of them.

Step 1 | Opening Procedure

Step 1 image

Apply tape to cracked display glass to contain breakage and prevent injury.

  • Place a suction cup near the volume button, avoiding the curved edge.
  • Avoid sealing the curved part with the suction cup as it won't create a good bond.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Risk of damaging OLED panel if pick is inserted deeper than 1.5 mm.

  • Pry tool between front panel and rear case with firm, constant pressure.
  • Insert pry tool no more than 1.5 mm to avoid damaging OLED panel.
  • If needed, rock suction cup and screen or apply heat using an iOpener, heat gun, or hair dryer.

Display panel is fragile. Avoid inserting tool further than necessary to separate adhesive.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Insertion depth crucial: avoid OLED panel damage.

  • Limit pick insertion to 9 mm on bottom edge to prevent display damage.
  • Shallow cuts only in upper left corner; prying deeply risks camera damage.

Sides and top/bottom limits: avoid display damage (1.5 mm, 9 mm max).

Step 4

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 2

Use the flat end of the opening pick instead of a corner to prevent over-insertion.

  • Slide the pick up the right side of the phone to separate the display adhesive.
  • Be extra cautious with the side bezels, only 1.5 mm deep.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3

Be careful not to damage or remove the earpiece mesh on the top edge of the screen.

  • Slide an opening pick around the upper-right corner and along the top edge of the phone.

Step 6

Step 6 image

  • Insert a spudger into the upper-left corner of the phone.
  • Gently slide the spudger down along the left edge of the phone.

Step 7

Thumbnail 3

Position the pick near the bottom-left corner and slide it along the phone's bottom edge.

  • Keep the pick at a slight angle, away from the screen, to protect the OLED corners.
  • Avoid inserting the pick more than 9 mm into the phone to prevent OLED damage.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 2

Reinsert the pick at the top edge and gently pry up the display.

  • If the display doesn't lift, apply extra prying force near the upper speaker to separate remaining adhesive.
  • Avoid fully separating the display as a fragile ribbon cable still connects it to the motherboard.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Thumbnail 2

Align the display on top of the rear case as shown.

  • Remove the two 4.0 mm T5 Torx screws securing the display cable bracket.

Keep track of each screw and ensure it is replaced in its original position.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Remove the display cable bracket.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Avoid touching the motherboard with the spudger, as components are fragile.

  • Lift the display cable connector out of its socket on the motherboard using a pointed spudger.
  • To reattach, carefully align and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side. Do not press in the middle.
  • If touch doesn't respond after repair, re-seat the connector, ensuring a full click and no dust or obstructions in the socket.

Pause during reassembly to replace adhesive around display edges.

Step 12 | Midframe

Step 12 image

Use a iOpener to heat the area around the proximity sensor on the top edge of the midframe for 2 minutes.

Step 13

Step 13 image

  • Insert the spudger near the proximity sensor cable and slide it towards the front-facing camera.
  • Lift the edge of the sensor cable gently, keeping the sensor level with the midframe.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Peel back any tape covering the screws around the earpiece speaker.

  • Remove all eleven 3.7 mm Phillips screws
  • Also remove one 4 mm T5 Torx screw

Keep track of each screw for reassembly.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Insert an opening tool into the notch near the hold button.

  • Pry the midframe up to create a gap with the phone case.
  • The midframe is not yet fully removable at this point.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Thumbnail 3

Lift the midframe up starting from the bottom edge.

  • When it reaches a 45° angle with the rest of the phone, lift it straight up and away.
  • Carefully guide the proximity sensor through its slot as you lift.

Step 17 | Battery Connector

Step 17 image

Disconnect the battery connector with the flat end of a spudger.

Step 18 | Battery

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 2

Disconnect the charging assembly connector using the flat end of a spudger.

Step 19

Step 19 image

Fill a plastic dropper or syringe with high concentration isopropyl alcohol and apply a few drops under each corner of the battery. Let it sit for 1 minute to loosen the adhesive.

  • Or, heat an iOpener and place it on the back of the phone over the battery for at least 2 minutes.
  • Reheat and reapply as needed until the adhesive is sufficiently weakened.

Step 20

Step 20 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Do not use metal tools to avoid damaging the delicate ribbon cables or deforming the battery.

  • Hold the charging assembly cable out of the way using your hand or a tool.
  • Insert an opening pick along the bottom edge of the battery, applying steady pressure.

Apply even pressure to slowly lever the battery up and out of the phone from the center only.

  • Avoid deforming the soft-shell lithium-ion battery during this process.
  • Be cautious: damaged batteries can leak chemicals, catch fire, or explode.

If having trouble, apply some alcohol under the battery and try again without using excessive force.

Step 21

Step 21 image

Do not reuse a removed battery as it poses a potential safety hazard.

  • Remove the battery from the phone.
  • Replace with a new battery, following the installation procedure below:

Scrape away any remaining adhesive using a spudger and clean the area with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

  • Apply pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape to secure the new battery, taking care not to touch cables under the battery.
  • Position the adhesive in the phone, not directly on the battery.

Press the battery firmly into place for 20-30 seconds to ensure a secure bond.

Step 22 | Motherboard

Step 22 image
