Google Pixel 2 Battery Replacement

Discharging a charged lithium-ion battery below 25% before disassembly prevents accidental fire or explosion if punctured.

  • Lithium-ion batteries can catch fire/explosion if punctured: keep them discharged below 25%
  • If your battery is swollen, take extra precautions to avoid damage
  • Accidental display damage is likely due to strong adhesive, minimal clearance & high heat required.
  • Work carefully and be prepared to replace the display if it's damaged during this repair (unless replacing together)
  • Fully discharge battery before disassembling: use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol to loosen adhesive and remove battery

Step 1 | Opening Procedure

Step 1 image

Taping the display glass prevents further breakage and bodily harm during repair.

  • Apply transparent tape to the cracked area for a smooth surface.
  • Position the suction cup near the volume button edge, avoiding the curved section.
  • The suction cup will not seal properly on the curved glass portion.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Risk of damaging the OLED panel if the pick is inserted deeper than 1.5 mm.

  • Apply firm, constant pressure to the suction cup while inserting an opening pick between the front and rear case.
  • Insert the pick no further than 1.5 mm to avoid damaging the OLED panel.

Display panel is fragile: be cautious when using tools to separate adhesive.

  • If the suction cup doesn't work, try rocking it and the screen to weaken the adhesive.
  • Alternatively, apply heat with an iOpener, heat gun, or hair dryer to assist separation.

To re-use your display safely: insert tools only as far as necessary to separate the adhesive, avoiding damage to the OLED panel underneath.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 2

Careful not to insert tools too far, as this may damage the phone's components.

  • Do not push pick more than 9 mm into bottom edge of phone, as it may damage OLED panel.
  • Make shallow cuts in upper left corner only; prying deeply can harm front-facing camera.
  • Avoid inserting tool deeper than 1.5 mm into sides or 9 mm into top and bottom, as this can permanently damage display.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 2

Use the flat part of the opening pick, not a corner, to avoid inserting it too deeply.

  • Slide the opening pick up along the right edge of the phone to start separating the display adhesive.
  • Be extra cautious around the side bezels, as they are only 1.5 mm thick and easily damaged.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3

Be careful not to damage the mesh covering the earpiece speaker.

  • Insert the pick at the upper-right corner and slide it along the top edge of the phone.
  • Avoid damaging or losing the existing mesh; a replacement is needed if it's missing or damaged.

Step 6

  • Insert a pick into the upper-left corner of the phone.
  • Gently slide it downwards along the left edge.

Step 7

Step 7 image

To prevent damage to the OLED corners, keep the pick at a slight angle away from the screen when sliding it around the bottom-left corner and along the bottom of the phone.

  • Slide the pick no more than 9 mm deep into the phone's seam.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Reinsert the pick at the top edge and gently pry up the display.

  • If the display doesn't lift easily, do some extra prying to separate any remaining adhesive.
  • The adhesive near the upper speaker is thicker and may require more effort.

Do not fully separate the display yet as a fragile ribbon cable still connects it to the motherboard.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Position the display face down on top of the rear case as illustrated.

Be cautious not to crease or damage the display ribbon cable.

  • Remove two T5 Torx screws (4.0 mm) securing the display cable bracket.
  • Keep track of each removed screw and ensure it is replaced in its original location.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Remove the display cable bracket.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Use a spudger to lift the display cable connector out of its socket on the motherboard.

Avoid touching the motherboard components surrounding the socket, as they are fragile and easily damaged.

  • To reattach press connectors: align carefully and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other side. Do not press in the middle.
  • If a connector is misaligned, the pins may bend, causing permanent damage.

If any screen area doesn't respond to touch after repair, re-seat this connector and ensure it's fully clicked into place with no dust or obstructions in the socket.

  • Pause here during reassembly and replace the adhesive around the display edges.

Step 12 | Midframe

Step 12 image

Apply a iOpener to the proximity sensor area at the top edge of the midframe for 2 minutes.

  • The iOpener should be heated before applying it to the proximity sensor.
  • After 2 minutes, carefully check if the adhesive is softened. If not, reheat and wait longer as needed.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert the spudger under the proximity sensor cable near the front-facing camera.

  • Lift the edge of the sensor cable, keeping it level with the midframe.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Peel back any tape covering screws.

  • Identify the 11 x 3.7 mm Phillips screws, one 4 mm T5 Torx screw
  • Remove these screws from the midframe.

Keep track of each screw for reassembly purposes.

Step 15

Step 15 image

  • Insert an opening tool into the notch in the midframe near the hold button.
  • Pry the midframe up to create a gap between it and the phone case, but do not remove it yet.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Thumbnail 3

Lift the midframe up starting from the bottom edge.

  • When the midframe is at about a 45° angle with the rest of the phone, lift it straight up and away.
  • As you lift the midframe, carefully guide the proximity sensor through the small slot in the midframe.

Step 17 | Battery Connector

Step 17 image

Disconnect the battery connector using the flat end of a spudger.

Step 18 | Battery

Disconnect the charging assembly connector using the flat end of a spudger.

Step 19

Step 19 image

Fill a plastic dropper or syringe with high concentration isopropyl alcohol. Apply a few drops under each corner of the battery.

Wait one minute for the adhesive to weaken.

  • Alternatively, apply a heated iOpener to the back of the phone over the battery for at least two minutes.
  • If necessary, reheat and reapply the iOpener until the adhesive is sufficiently weakened.

Step 20

Step 20 image

Thumbnail 2

Hold the charging assembly cable out of the way.

  • Insert an opening pick along the bottom edge of the battery.
  • Apply steady, even pressure to slowly lever the battery up and out.
  • Only pry from the center of the battery to avoid damaging the ribbon cables.

Deforming the battery can cause leaks, fires, or explosions. Use gentle force and non-metal tools only.

If needed, reapply alcohol under the battery and try again.

Step 21

Step 21 image

Thumbnail 2

Do not reuse a removed battery as this poses a safety hazard.

  • Replace the battery with a new one.

Installing a new battery:

  • Scrape away remaining adhesive from the phone using a spudger, then clean the area with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
  • Secure the new battery with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape. Apply the adhesive to the phone, not directly on the battery.
  • Ensure the adhesive doesn't touch any cables under the battery.

Press the new battery firmly into place for 20-30 seconds.
