  • Use this guide to replace a cracked or faulty screen on your Google Pixel 2 XL.
  • The replacement part may require new adhesive for sealing the phone, if not included.
  • Closely inspect both displays to ensure all necessary components are transferred from the original display.

Step 1 | Opening Procedure

Step 1 image

Cover cracked display glass with tape for safety and smooth surface.

  • Position a suction cup near the SIM slot, avoiding the curved edge.
  • The suction cup will not form a seal on the curved part of the glass.

Step 2

Apply firm, constant pressure to the suction cup until the front panel is loose.

  • If resistance persists, try gently rocking the suction cup and screen to weaken the adhesive.
  • Alternatively, apply heat with a iOpener, heat gun, or hair dryer for added assistance.

Step 3

Avoid damaging the phone's display and camera by following these precautions.

  • Insert the pick no more than 0.25 inches (6 mm) into the bottom edge to prevent OLED panel damage.
  • Avoid cutting along the left edge, as this can harm delicate display cables.
  • Make shallow cuts in the upper left corner only; deep prying may damage the front-facing camera.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Insert the opening pick at the top right edge of the phone and gently slide it down along the right side, working to separate the display adhesive.

Step 5

Use the flat edge of the opening pick, not the corner.

  • Slide it around the lower-right corner.
  • Continue along the bottom edge of the phone.

Reinsert the flat edge of the pick at the top-right corner.

  • Slide it around the corner.
  • Continue along the top edge of the phone.

Step 7

Lift the display from the right side, opening like a book.

If it doesn't lift easily, apply extra pressure to separate the remaining adhesive.

  • Don't fully separate the display yet, as delicate ribbon cables remain attached.
  • Lay the display flat next to the phone on a table, keeping it close to avoid straining cables.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Use a corner of an opening tool to pry up and unclip the lower edge of the digitizer cable connector cover.

  • The clip securing this cover is located along the bottom edge, be aware of its location before prying.
  • Pry carefully to avoid damaging the cable underneath or losing the cover itself.

Remove the connector cover and keep it safe for reinstallation during assembly.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Use a spudger to lift the digitizer cable connector off its motherboard socket.

  • To reconnect, align carefully and press down on one side until it clicks; repeat for the other side.
  • Do not press the middle of the connector to avoid pin damage.

  • Re-seat the connector if your screen doesn't respond after repair: ensure a click and check for dust or obstructions in the socket.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Remove any tape covering the display connector with a pair of tweezers.

Step 11

Insert the point of a spudger into the small hole on the edge of the display connector cover.

  • Pry the cover out of its recess using the spudger.
  • Remove the connector cover and keep it secure for later reassembly.

  • Lift the display cable connector with the flat edge of a spudger, removing it from its socket.
  • Remove the display completely.
  • Pause here to replace adhesive around the edges if desired during reassembly.

Step 13 | Screen

The new display may not come pre-installed with speaker grilles and front-facing camera gasket.

  • Remove these parts from old display using tweezers, then follow this guide to install on new display.

Pre-clean parts by removing any adhesive residue before reinstalling.

Install grilles and gasket before applying display adhesive.

  • Cut a 1 mm double-sided tape strip, about 3 cm (1.25 inches) long.
  • Lay strip along upper edge of earpiece speaker slot in new display, centered over the slot and touching the edge.
  • Avoid overlapping edges; it can interfere with display adhesive.

Press adhesive strip into place gently with finger or spudger.

Peel backing away from adhesive strip carefully.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Thumbnail 3

Place the speaker grille into its slot so that the indented half sits inside and the flat half rests on top of the adhesive.

  • Spudger, point end first, gently push the edges of the grille against the slot's edges to center it.

Avoid pushing directly onto the adhesive yet — misalignment risks damage.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Use a spudger's flat end to push down on the top of the grille, applying it to the adhesive strip.

  • Install the lower speaker grille by repeating steps.
  • Apply the adhesive strip to the lower edge of the speaker slot, then position the grille with its flat half below the slot.

Step 16

If reusing old gasket, ensure no sticky adhesive remains.

  • Cut a 1 mm wide x 6 mm long piece of adhesive.
  • Place it underneath the camera hole, parallel to top display edge.
  • Cut two 3 mm long x 1 mm wide pieces of adhesive.
  • Position them left and right of the camera hole, perpendicular to bottom strip.

Press strips firmly into place with finger or spudger.

All three strips should be close to the camera hole without overlapping it.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Remove the white adhesive backing from each strip.

Step 18

Step 18 image

Place the front-facing camera gasket centered over the camera hole on top of the adhesive.

  • The gasket should not overlap the hole, or it may disrupt camera function.
  • Press the gasket down firmly with your finger or a spudger.

During boot-up, avoid touching the screen during calibration to prevent touch issues.
