Google Pixel 2 XL Battery Replacement

A swollen battery can catch fire and/or explode if punctured, causing injury.

  • Discharge the battery below 25% before starting disassembly.
  • Remove any obstructions or debris from the back cover.

Never heat your phone. If necessary, use a syringe to inject isopropyl alcohol (90+%) around the edges of the back cover to loosen adhesive.

Wear eye protection and exercise caution when handling swollen batteries.

Step 1 | Opening Procedure

Prevent bodily harm and further breakage by taping over the cracked display glass.

Apply a smooth layer of tape to create a flat surface for the suction cup.

  • Position the suction cup as close as possible to the SIM slot edge, avoiding the curved section.
  • Avoid placing the suction cup on the curved portion of the glass, as it will not create a seal.

Step 2

Be cautious — opening may require considerable force.

  • Apply firm, constant pressure while pulling up on the suction cup.
  • Insert an opening pick between the front panel and rear case.
  • Alternately:
    • Rock the suction cup and screen to loosen adhesive.
    • Use heat from an iOpener, heat gun, or hair dryer.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Avoid damaging the phone by being cautious when cutting around sensitive areas.

  • Insert the pick no more than 0.25 inches (6 mm) into the bottom edge to prevent OLED panel damage.
  • Avoid cutting along the left edge to spare delicate display cables from damage.
  • In the upper left corner, make shallow cuts only to avoid damaging the front-facing camera.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Slide the opening pick along the right edge of the phone, working it downwards to loosen the display adhesive.

Step 5

Use the flat edge of the opening pick, not the corner, to pry open the device.

  • Start by sliding the opening pick around the lower-right corner.
  • Continue along the bottom edge of the phone.

Step 6

Reposition the pick at the top-right corner of the phone.

  • Slide the pick along the top edge of the phone.

Step 7

Do not fully separate the display yet, as fragile ribbon cables remain intact.

  • Lift the display from the right side of the phone, opening it like a book.
  • If it doesn't lift easily, use extra force to pry and separate the remaining adhesive.
  • Lay the display flat next to the phone on a table, keeping it close to avoid straining cables.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Use a corner of an opening tool to pry up and unclip the lower edge of the digitizer cable connector cover.

  • The clip securing this cover is located along the bottom edge.
  • Pry carefully to avoid damaging the underlying cable or losing the cover itself, as noted in the guide warning below.

Risk of damage from prying without caution may result in costly repairs.

  • Remove the digitizer cable connector cover once unclipped.
  • Set aside this component for proper reinstallation during assembly.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Use a spudger to lift the digitizer cable connector from its motherboard socket.

  • To reattach, align the connector carefully and press one side down until it clicks into place.
  • Repeat on the other side; do not press in the middle.

Misaligned connectors can bend pins, causing permanent damage.

Re-seat the connector if screen areas don't respond to touch, ensuring a secure click and clearing any dust from the socket.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Remove any tape from the display connector cover using tweezers.

Step 11

  • Insert the point of a spudger into the small hole on the edge of the display connector cover.
  • Pry out the cover with the spudger.
  • Remove the connector cover and store it securely for reassembly.

Step 12

Use the flat edge of a spudger to lift the display cable connector up from its socket.

  • Remove the display.
  • Consider replacing the adhesive around the edges of the display during reassembly.

Step 13 | Midframe

Step 13 image

Remove eleven 3.8 mm Phillips screws holding the midframe in place.

  • Keep track of each screw as you remove it to ensure correct reinstallation later.
  • Label or note the location of each screw for accurate reassembly.

Step 14

  • Insert a pick into the notch near the volume buttons.
  • Pry the midframe upwards, away from the phone.

Remove the midframe.

Step 15 | Battery Connector

Disconnect the battery connector with the flat end of a spudger.

Step 16 | Battery

Step 16 image

Apply isopropyl alcohol under each corner of the battery, if available, allowing it to penetrate for several minutes.

Alternatively, use a heated iOpener on the back of the phone over the battery for at least two minutes, reheat and reapply as needed until the adhesive is sufficiently weakened.

  • Continue to apply heat in short intervals until the adhesive weakens.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Batteries can leak chemicals, catch fire, or explode if deformed.

  • Insert a couple of opening picks or a plastic card along the right edge of the battery.
  • Apply steady pressure to slowly lever the battery up and out.

Avoid excessive force and metal tools, which can cause damage.

Step 18

Step 18 image

Reusing a removed battery poses a safety hazard.

  • Remove the battery.
  • Clean any residual alcohol solution from the phone with a lint-free cloth or air dry it before installing your new battery.

Apply new adhesive to the phone, not directly on the battery.

  • Peel away remaining adhesive using tweezers and clean glued areas with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
  • Secure the new battery with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape.
  • Firmly press the battery into place for 20-30 seconds.
