Thumbnail 2

Let the Pixel's battery drain to below 25% before starting repair.

  • Unplug all cables and power down the device completely.
  • If rear cover is bulging, battery may be swollen; take necessary precautions.

Step 2 | Heat the rear cover

Step 2 image

Heat the rear cover using a hair dryer until it's hot to the touch.

  • For best results, refer to additional guidance on using a hair dryer for adhesive softening.
  • Alternatively, follow this guide if using an iOpener.

Step 3 | Create an opening gap

Step 3 image

Hold the suction handle firmly and pull up with steady force.

  • A gap should form between the cover and frame.
  • If a gap doesn't form, reheat the edge and try again.
  • Insert the tip of an opening pick into the gap.

Step 5 | Adhesive information

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 2

Separate the rear cover from the device using a reference picture.

  • Begin by prying away the adhesive along the frame perimeter.
  • Insert your tool no more than 3 mm when prying loose the left edge adhesive to avoid damaging the wireless charging coil and its graphite film.

Step 6 | Separate the rear cover

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply an opening pick to the perimeter of the device and slide it along to separate the adhesive.

Excessive force may cause damage — use gentle pressure instead.

If separation is difficult, reapply heat and attempt again.

Step 7

Thumbnail 2

Use a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver to remove the 15 screws securing the wireless charging assembly.

  • Remove the 13 gray screws and 2 silver non-magnetic screws, noting their locations for reassembly.

Careful not to mix or lose any screws during this process; reattach each one exactly where it was found to prevent damage to your phone.

Step 10 | Unclip the wireless charging assembly

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert an opening pick into the gap at the bottom-right corner of the device.

  • Pry upwards carefully to unclip the wireless charging assembly from this cutout.
  • Repeat the process by inserting another opening pick near the power button on the left edge.
  • Continue prying up and outwards to release the wireless charging assembly completely.

Thumbnail 2

The battery adhesive is strong; multiple attempts may be required.

  • With both hands, firmly grab the "2" pull tab near the left edge of the phone frame.
  • Brace your hands against the rest of the phone frame.

If the battery does not loosen, proceed to the next step for an alternate method.

  • Pull up with firm, steady force until the battery separates from the phone frame.

Step 18 | Loosen the battery (alternate method)

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply 2-3 drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol (90%+) to the left edge of the battery.

  • Tilt phone's left edge upwards to allow alcohol to flow under the battery.
  • Wait 1 minute for adhesive to soften.
  • Use a flat opening pick to pry up the left edge of the battery until it separates.

Step 19 | Remove the battery and liner

Step 19 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Remove the battery with its attached plastic liner.

  • Pry out the battery using a flat tool or credit card.
  • Gently pull away the liner to remove it from the phone.

Step 20 | Disassembly complete

Step 20 image

Reassembly of your phone begins now.

  • Follow these steps in reverse order from the disassembly sequence.

Step 21 | Clean the frame

Step 21 image

Use only high-concentration (>90%) isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth or coffee filters to avoid spreading adhesive.

  • Clean the battery well with a lint-free cloth or coffee filters dampened in isopropyl alcohol.

Step 22 | Remove the thin battery liner

Step 22 image

Remove the thin liner from the top edge of the battery's back.

Step 32 image

Test your repair: Power on your phone and verify all features are functional.

  • Run a diagnostics test using the Pixel Diagnostic tool.

If screen or fingerprint sensor is malfunctioning, reconnect the screen connector.

Full power down before reassembly.

Step 33 | Clean the frame

Step 33 image

Take your time cleaning the frame.

A clean frame ensures better bond quality, as replacement adhesive will lay evenly.

  • Use your fingers, spudger, or tweezers to remove the adhesive from the frame perimeter.
  • For large pieces of adhesive, pull slowly and straight in the opposite direction.

Remove any remaining residue with high concentration (greater than 90%) isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth (or coffee filter).
