Asus Zenfone 3 Max Motherboard Replacement

Replacing the motherboard requires great care to avoid damaging other components.

  • The Asus Zenfone 3 Max (ZC520TL) may have a damaged motherboard if it won't turn on with charging.
  • This guide will assist in replacing the motherboard with a new one.

Step 1 | SIM card

Identify the SIM card slot situated at the top left corner of your Asus Zenfone Max 3.

  • Insert the iFixit 150mm Flex Extension using either the Hex 0.7 bit or the SIM card eject tool.
  • Pierce the hole on the SIM card slot and open it with the inserted tool.

Remove the SIM card completely from its slot.

Make sure to remove any retaining clips or holders before pulling out the SIM card.

Step 4 | Back cover

Insert iFixit opening tool into gap between phone and case.

  • Gently rock iFixit opening tool up and down to separate back casing from phone.

Step 5

Align the new cover on the back of the phone and apply even pressure.

Step 6 | Battery

Disconnect the gold connection cable, indicated by a red circle in the corresponding picture.

  • Pull back on the black adhesive tab attached to the top of the battery; its removal is marked with an orange circle in the picture.
  • The battery can be removed once both the gold connection cable and black adhesive tab are disconnected from it.

Hold the blue removal tab and pull the device battery out from the device.

  • Gently release any remaining grip on the battery.
  • The battery should come free completely, ensuring a secure removal.

Step 8 | Motherboard

Remove the two 2.5mm Phillips #0 screws marked with red circles.

  • The screws are located in the upper corners of the device.
  • Once removed, detach the white plastic internal panel completely from the device.

Use only a nylon spudger to avoid risk of damage or static shock.

  • Remove the four 2.5mm Phillips #0 screws surrounding the motherboard component.
  • Carefully detach the two device cables at the bottom of the motherboard using a nylon spudger.
  • Disconnect the remaining component cable in the same manner as above.

Never use a metal spudger on internal components, as they are not ESD safe and can cause damage or static shock.

Handle the motherboard with care to avoid damage.

  • Grip the motherboard firmly.
  • Lift and carefully remove it from the internal casing.
