Asus ZenFone 2 Motherboard Replacement

Unplugging the antenna and removing the battery must be done before commencing motherboard replacement.

  • Remove the battery.
  • Disconnect the antenna connector.

Step 1 | Removing the Back Cover

Use a fingernail to carefully pry off the phone's back cover, starting from the marked location.

  • While prying with your fingernail, slide your finger along the edges of the phone until the cover comes loose.
  • The cover should pop off easily once separated from the phone.

Step 2 | Remove the Inner Cover Screws

Remove thirteen JIS 00 black screws (2.8 mm) and one silver screw (JIS 00, 5.5 mm) from the phone's back using a JIS size 00 screwdriver.

Be cautious when handling the sticker covering the camera/flash area, as it can be easily pierced by the screwdriver tip.

  • Use gentle prying action to remove the black screws from the back of the phone.
  • For the sticker-covered screw, position the screwdriver carefully and pierce through the sticker with a steady motion.

Step 3 | Remove the Inner Cover

Insert the plastic opening tool under the inner phone backing.

  • Lift gently to loosen the double-sided tape strips.
  • The backing should come off easily with minimal force.

Step 4 | Remove the Speaker

Mark the location of the speaker unit for easy replacement.

  • Remove the inner back panel.
  • The speaker should now be free to be removed from the back of the phone.

Step 5 | Remove the Antenna

Use a plastic opening tool to gently pry up both ends of the antenna.

  • Remove the antenna wire from the plastic keepers along the side, noting their position for reassembly.
  • Lift the antenna connections from underneath the cable as shown, taking care not to bend them out of shape.

Step 6 | Unlock Circuit Board Ribbon Cable

Use a plastic opening tool to pry up the yellow tab on the ribbon cable that connects the battery to the circuit board.

Step 7 | Remove Vibration Motor

Use a plastic opening tool to carefully pry the vibration motor loose from its mount.

Step 8 | Remove Circuit Board

Remove the circuit board from the phone by gently pulling it towards you from the bottom.

Step 9 | Disconnect Ribbon Cables

Disconnect the ribbon cables using a plastic opening tool. Gently pry them away from their connectors.

Step 10 | Remove the Battery

Be cautious when removing the battery pack as it is secured with adhesive.

  • Use your hand to carefully pry the battery pack away from its mounting.
  • Avoid applying excessive force, which may damage the surrounding components.
  • Take care not to break the delicate tabs located on both sides of the battery.

Step 11 | Lift up the Copper Heat Strip

Careful: do not damage or rip the copper sheet heat strip.

  • Lift the copper sheet heat strip from the phone body using a plastic opening tool.
  • Start at one upper corner of the copper sheet and slowly slide the tool along its edges.

Step 12 | Detach the Motherboard Ribbon Cable

Remove the ribbon cable indicated in the diagram using a plastic opening tool.

Step 13 | Detach the Screen Connector Ribbon Cable

Use a plastic opening tool to disconnect the display cable.

  • Position the tool under the display cable, then pull it outwards with care.

Step 14 | Remove the Motherboard from the Retaining Clips

Careful not to damage the black plastic retainers as they will be reused.

  • Insert a plastic opening tool under one top corner of the motherboard.
  • Lift upward with gentle force to disengage this side from the black plastic retainers.
  • Repeat for the other side.

Step 15 | Finish Removing the Motherboard

Release one edge of the motherboard from the black plastic retainer.

  • The motherboard should come out easily once free.
  • Remove the entire motherboard from the phone.
