Asus ZenFone 2 Display Replacement

Be prepared for a time-consuming process as you'll need to apply heat to loosen the display's adhesive.

  • Unplug the antenna.
  • Remove the battery and motherboard.

Apply heat to detach the display from its housing before proceeding.

Step 1 | Removing the Back Cover

Slide your fingertip under the back cover, starting from the marked area.

Be gentle to avoid damaging the phone's casing.

Work your way around the edges of the phone with a slow sliding motion until the cover comes off.

Step 2 | Remove the Inner Cover Screws

Remove all screws from the back of the phone using a JIS size 00 screwdriver.

  • Thirteen black screws (2.8 mm in length) and one silver screw (5.5 mm in length).
  • The black screw next to the camera and flash is covered by a sticker, but it can be easily removed using the tip of the JIS size 00 screwdriver.

Step 3 | Remove the Inner Cover

Insert the plastic opening tool under the inner phone backing.

  • Lift the tool to loosen the tape holding strips.
  • Continue to pry the backing away from the phone casing.

Step 4 | Remove the Speaker

Mark the location of the speaker unit to ensure proper reinstallation.

  • Remove the inner back panel.
  • The speaker should now be loose and can be removed from the back of the phone.

Step 5 | Remove the Antenna

Bent antenna connectors may cause connectivity issues.

  • Use a plastic opening tool to gently pry up both ends of the antenna.
  • Remove the antenna wire from plastic keepers along the side, noting their position for reassembly.
  • Lift the antenna connections from underneath the cable as shown, taking care not to bend them out of shape.

Step 6 | Unlock Circuit Board Ribbon Cable

Insert the plastic opening tool under the yellow tab and gently pry it up to release the ribbon cable.

Step 7 | Remove Vibration Motor

Use a plastic opening tool to carefully pry the vibration motor from its mount.

Step 8 | Remove Circuit Board

Pull the circuit board away from the phone's bottom, being gentle to avoid damage.

Step 9 | Disconnect Ribbon Cables

Use a plastic opening tool to carefully pry up each ribbon cable from its connector.

Step 10 | Remove the Battery

Be cautious when removing the battery pack from the phone — risk of damaging fragile tabs.

  • Hold the battery pack firmly with one hand and use your other hand to gently pry it loose using a suitable force.
  • Avoid applying excessive pressure, as the battery is held in place by adhesive on the top side.
  • Beware of the fragile tabs located on the left and right sides of the battery.

Step 11 | Lift up the Copper Heat Strip

Careful not to damage the copper sheet heat strip.

  • Insert a plastic opening tool into an upper corner of the copper sheet.
  • Lift the copper sheet heat strip slowly, sliding the tool along its edges.

Step 12 | Detach the Motherboard Ribbon Cable

Use a plastic opening tool to release the ribbon cable shown.

Step 13 | Detach the Screen Connector Ribbon Cable

Use a plastic opening tool to disconnect the display cable from the motherboard.

  • Insert tool underneath the cable, then gently pull outward.

Step 14 | Remove the Motherboard from the Retaining Clips

Do not damage the black plastic retainers — they secure the motherboard.

  • Insert a plastic opening tool under one top corner of the motherboard.
  • Lift upward with gentle force to release this side of the motherboard from the retainers.

Be cautious not to break the black plastic retainers, as they are required for reassembly.

Step 15 | Finish Removing the Motherboard

Remove one side of the motherboard from the black plastic retainers.

  • The entire motherboard can now be carefully lifted out of the phone.

Step 16 | Display

Pry the display cable away from the phone's body using a plastic opening tool.

Apply heat to the display's adhesive using either a heat gun or hair dryer.

  • The adhesive is located along the edges of the display.
  • A heat gun will melt the adhesive in approximately 30 seconds, while a hair dryer takes 3-5 minutes.

Do not apply excessive force to the display — risk of damage.

  • Insert the plastic opening tool between the display and housing at the edges of the phone.
  • Gently pry the screen away, then slide the tool around the edges to release it completely.

Step 19

Remove the display cable from the hole in the top of the phone body.

  • If keeping the original cable, rotate the display while separating it from the backing to preserve the connection.
  • The new display will come with a replacement cable; if damaged, ignore and proceed without reusing the original cable.

Remove the speaker grill using a plastic opening tool.

  • Place it in its designated spot on the body of the device.
  • We recommend attaching the speaker grill to the body rather than the display, as this provides a secure and reliable connection.

Feed the antenna cables through the corresponding holes in the housing.

  • Rethatch the phone display using adhesive. You may reuse old adhesive if still serviceable, or apply new 2 mm thick double-sided adhesive
