Asus Zenfone 2 Display Assembly Replacement

  • Tear down the display assembly in a step-by-step manner.
  • Replace the display assembly with a new one if faulty.

Step 1 | Compatible Replacement Part

Step 1 image

Check the back of the original screen for the code "TL055VDXP34-00".

  • The first replacement display assembly had the code "TLD55VVXP31-00" — an incorrect part.
  • The second replacement display assembly, which worked correctly, has the code "TL055VDXP34-00".

Ensure that any replacement assembly matches this model number (TL055VDXP34-00) to avoid continued issues.

Step 2 | Remove back cover

Step 2 image

Remove the back cover, sim card(s), and memory card.

Step 3 | Remove screws in plastic panel

Step 3 image

Be aware of the small cover next to the camera, potentially stuck with a sticker.

  • Remove the small cover adjacent to the camera.
  • Count the screws; there should be 14.
  • Check that one screw near the camera, which may be obscured.

Removing these 14 screws will allow the phone's components to detach, including the speaker unit.

Step 4 | Remove panel

Step 4 image

Use a sharp blade to carefully pry the plastic panel at one end.

  • Separate the double-sided tape between the battery and plastic panel with the blade.
  • The tape is not strictly necessary, but it can be removed if desired.

Step 5 | Remove Internals

Step 5 image

Remove the antenna cable.

  • Pull out the vibrate motor towards you.
  • Raise each of the four connectors above the battery, then slide them away from the phone.

Step 6 | Remove Flat Cable

Step 6 image

Remove the yellow plastic sticker covering the flat cable.

  • Lift the white tab to release the cable.
  • Gently pull the cable out towards the base of the phone.

Step 7 | Remove Battery

Step 7 image

Be very cautious when removing the battery as there are two types of adhesives involved.

  • Identify the adhesive type: double-sided foam tape (easy to remove) or self-amalgamating tape (hard to remove).
  • Preheat the screen side facing you by applying heat with a hair-dryer for easier removal.

When removing, be gentle when handling small metal tabs and avoid forcing them as they are flimsy.

  • Apply heat to the battery using a hair-dryer.
  • Gently pull up on the left side of the phone, away from the antennas (right side) located near the rear.

The adhesive is situated close to the antenna location. Do not force removal as this may cause damage.

Step 8 | Remove Copper Piece

Step 8 image

Lift the copper sheet using tweezers, starting from one corner and working your way across.

Be gentle as it's held in place with mild adhesive.

Step 9 | Remove display plug

Step 9 image

Careful when handling the screen plug, as this will be replaced.

  • Lift the yellow plastic sticker to access the connection.
  • Disconnect the screen plug as shown in the picture.

If replacing the display assembly, cut the cable or remove it entirely from the main unit for a clean installation.

Step 10 | Remove Processor

Step 10 image

Locate and carefully pry out the plastic retainer using a gentle amount of force.

  • Start by prying on one side of the retainer.
  • Once freed, easily remove the entire section.

Step 11 | Remove Screen Cable

Step 11 image

Remove the display cable from the phone's body, gently prying it away from the adhesive holding it in place.

Be aware that the new display assembly may have adhesive on the replacement cable; follow manufacturer instructions for proper reattachment.

Step 12 | Remove Display

Step 12 image

Apply heat using a heat gun (30 seconds) or hair drier (3-5 minutes) to loosen the adhesive behind the screen.

  • Work around the edges with an opening pick to separate the display from the housing.
  • Lift the display cable through the top hole in the phone body when mostly separated.

Step 13 | Remove Speaker Grill

Step 13 image

Separate the speaker grill from the original display. Clean away the old adhesive.

  • Attach the speaker grill to the phone's battery frame.
  • This will help ensure proper alignment for the new screen.

Step 14 | Adhesive

Step 14 image

Replace the existing adhesive on the screen assembly if necessary.

  • Use a sharp razor blade to carefully peel off the old adhesive.

Test fit the new screen without adhesive before proceeding to ensure correct cable placement.

The cables include one that goes behind the screen and through the phone's middle, and another through the top hole. The latter has a unique shape and should be inserted sideways first.

Step 15 | Attaching New Display

Step 15 image

Use thicker alternative if possible — 3mm or original adhesive recommended.

  • Apply 2mm 3M double-sided adhesive tape around the edge of new screen assembly.
  • If available, use thicker tape; otherwise, double it over to compensate for insufficient thickness.
  • This approach should provide a good fit, but consider replacing with original or closer-to-original adhesive if possible.

Step 16 | Attaching New Display part 2

Step 16 image

Do not apply excessive pressure to the screen assembly until both cables are securely seated.

  • Begin by placing the screen assembly on the phone, starting from the top edge.
  • Feed the top cable through its corresponding hole first.
  • Gradually work your way down, ensuring the screen remains properly aligned with the body.

Step 17 | Attach Display Cable

Step 17 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Locate the display cable on the rear of the phone.

  • Remove the adhesive backing from the display cable.
  • Position the cable between the four black markers.

Step 18 | Assembly

Step 18 image

Start re-assembly by following the disassembly steps in reverse.

  • Be aware that the display cable may get caught on double-sided tape at the top, requiring it to be pulled through.
  • Use moderate force when mounting the processor unit between the four plastic clips; be careful not to damage any components (see step 10).

  • Completely remove all double-sided tape from under the battery and case for easier future access.
  • If a yellow cable sticker is lost, you can use one from your old display assembly as a replacement.
