iPhone 14 Plus Rear-Facing Camera Assembly Replacement

This document details the procedure for substituting the rear camera module on an iPhone 14 Plus.

The repair steps detailed here are based on the A2886 iPhone 14 Plus variant, designed for international markets; while other model numbers might present slight appearance differences, the overall repair process remains consistent.

With iOS 18 or later versions installed, Apple’s Repair Assistant provides a method for calibrating replacement, original-equipment camera modules.

  • To secure the display during reassembly, apply fresh adhesive.
  • The device should operate as expected following this procedure; however, it's probable that the water and dust resistance, as defined by the Ingress Protection rating, will be compromised.

Step 1 | Remove the pentalobe screws

Step 1 image

  • To prevent electrical shock or damage to components, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to commencing the teardown process.
  • Detach the two 4mm screws securing the component. The specified dimension is 6.8 millimeters.Carefully remove the iPhone's bottom edge using the long pentalobe P2 screwdriver, as it secures with those screws.

Step 2 | Mark your opening picks

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3
  • To avoid potential damage to your device, ensure the opening pick does not extend beyond a safe depth; to help with this, mark the pick according to the following procedure.
Determine the dimension using an appropriate measuring tool.Three millimeters.Using a permanent marker, indicate the opening point on the pick.
  • Alternative corner markings, using the same measurement tools, can be added to the remaining corners of the pick.
  • Securely affix a coin to the tip of a pick using adhesive tape.Three millimeters.Beginning at the very end, proceed.

Step 3 | Tape over any cracks

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 2
  • To minimize the risk of additional damage and potential injury while replacing a cracked rear glass on your iPhone, secure the glass with tape.
Apply strips of transparent packing tape across the iPhone's back glass, ensuring complete coverage by layering them.
  • To safeguard your eyes from potential glass fragments released during the repair process, always use safety glasses.
  • Should the suction cup fail to adhere during subsequent procedures, create a lifting handle by folding a durable tape—like duct tape—and use this improvised handle to raise the rear glass.
  • As a last resort, apply a small amount of superglue to adhere the suction cup securely to the back glass.

Step 4 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 4 image
  • Apply warmth to the lower perimeter of the iPhone’s rear housing with a hair dryer or heat gun, ensuring the glass surface reaches a temperature just beyond comfortable touch.
To prevent overheating and potential damage, avoid keeping the heat gun stationary on any surface for too long.

Step 5 | Insert an opening pick

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3
  • Using a suction handle, carefully adhere it to the lower portion of the rear glass, ensuring you position it away from the perimeter edge.
  • Apply steady, even force to lift the suction cup, generating a small separation between the back glass and the device's frame.
  • Using a specialized opening tool, carefully introduce its tip into the separation.
  • Because the adhesive securing the rear glass is robust, considerable force is required to initially separate it; if difficulty arises, increase heat application and gently oscillate the rear glass vertically to reduce adhesive strength, allowing for sufficient gap creation to accommodate the opening pick.

Step 6 | Heat the left edge

Step 6 image

Apply heat to the left side of the iPhone's casing until the temperature of the rear glass reaches a level where it's noticeably uncomfortable to the touch.

Step 7 | Slice the left edge adhesive

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 3
  • Using the opening pick, carefully separate the rear glass from the frame by inserting it into the gap at the lower left corner and moving it upward along the left side, severing the adhesive bond.
  • Limit pick insertion depth to avoid exceeding.Three millimeters.Exercise caution to prevent harm to the device's internal parts.

Step 8 | Heat the right edge

Step 8 image

Apply heat to the right side of the iPhone, specifically the area bordering the power button, until the rear glass surface reaches a temperature just beyond comfortable touch.

Step 9 | Screen information

Step 9 image
Avoid inserting the prying tool near the cable situated on the iPhone’s right side to prevent potential damage to it.

Step 10 | Slice the right edge adhesive

Step 10 image

  • Using a plastic opening pick, carefully reintroduce it near the device's lower border.
  • Advance the component upwards along its right edge to further release the bonding agent.
Limit pick insertion depth to a maximum of 3 millimeters.Carefully handle the charging coil cable to prevent damage.

Step 11 | Heat the top edge

Step 11 image
Apply heat evenly across the iPhone’s upper edge, using a heat source, until the rear glass reaches a temperature just beyond comfortable touch.

Step 12 | Slice the top edge adhesive

Step 12 image

Using a pick, gently work it between the phone's casing and the body at the top-right corner, moving it along the corner and then across the top edge, stopping when it has traveled approximately halfway.

Step 13

  • Using a pick, gently work it between the phone's body and the casing, starting at the upper-left corner, then move it along the top edge, progressing until it's positioned approximately halfway across.
  • To prevent damage, limit pick insertion depth to.Three millimeters.Exercise caution to prevent harm or distortion to the camera array.
  • Avoid complete detachment of the rear glass at this stage, because a delicate ribbon cable links it to the iPhone's main circuit board.

Step 14 | Open the iPhone

Step 14 image

Thumbnail 3
  • Detach the suction handle from the back glass.
  • Carefully lift the rear glass component, pivoting it upwards from the left edge, employing a motion similar to opening a book's cover.
  • Exercise caution to prevent damage to the small charging coil flexible cable.
  • To prevent the rear glass from falling during the repair process, support it using a stable object; alternatively, the suction handle can be employed for this purpose.

Step 15 | Unfasten the battery connector cover screws

Step 15 image
  • Employ a Y000 screwdriver for the removal of both screws. One point three millimeters.Use the long screws to fasten the battery connector cover in place.
  • Carefully organize all screws during disassembly, noting their original locations, as incorrect reassembly can cause iPhone damage.
  • Before permanently securing the display, it's recommended to activate the iPhone and verify all features are operating correctly; afterward, fully deactivate the device to proceed with the remaining assembly steps.

Step 16 | Remove the battery connector cover

Step 16 image

  • Using tweezers, move the battery connector cover upwards in the direction of the "A15" marking to release the upper retaining clip.
  • Access the battery connector by first removing its protective cover.

Step 17 | Disconnect the battery

Step 17 image

  • Employ the specified tool to apply a force of 15 Nm to the fastener, ensuring the torque wrench is set to the correct value and observing all safety precautions. The spudger's tapered tipUsing a levering motion, detach the battery cable connector by raising it vertically from its receptacle.
  • Carefully avoid harming the black silicone seals located around this and other circuit board connections, as they are critical for preventing water and dust from entering.
  • To avoid unintended power-up during the repair process, carefully deflect the connector outward, ensuring it doesn't touch the socket.

Step 18 | Unfasten the charging coil connector cover

Step 18 image
  • Employ a 3/8-inch socket wrench to tighten the fastener to a torque of 15 Nm, ensuring you observe all safety precautions and handle the component with care.Use a Y000-type screwdriver.Detach the solitaryA screw measuring 1.0 millimeters in length.Ensure the charging coil connector cover is firmly in place.

  • Carefully detach the rear glass assembly, ensuring all technical specifications and part names are retained during the process.
  • Following cleaning of the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol exceeding 90% purity, ensure fresh adhesive is applied to the required locations.
  • If adhesive replacement is desired during reassembly, stop at this point.

Step 22 | Disconnect the rear-facing camera assembly
