iPhone 6 Plus Rear Case Replacement

Follow these instructions to substitute a new rear case if the existing one is scratched or has sustained damage.

  • Before proceeding, disconnect power by extracting the battery.
  • To ensure proper adhesion during battery reinstallation within the new case, follow the instructions in this guide to substitute the existing adhesive strips.

To prevent movement and noise, ensure the battery is firmly positioned during reassembly.

Step 1 | Pentalobe Screws

Step 1 image
To prevent a potential fire or explosion hazard from the lithium-ion battery during disassembly, ensure its charge level is reduced to less than 25% beforehand; a fully charged battery poses a significant risk of ignition if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to commencing the repair process.
Using a Pentalobe screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the Lightning connector.

Step 2 | Anti-Clamp instructions

Thumbnail 3
Moving the blue handle in a forward direction will engage the locking mechanism for the arms.
Rotate the handle fully, completing a 360-degree turn, observing for the initial expansion of the cups.
Maintain parallel positioning of the suction cups; should misalignment occur, gently release the suction cups' hold and reposition the arms.
Once sufficient separation is achieved by the Anti-Clamp, use a prying tool or opening pick to gain access beneath the display panel.
To ensure adequate separation, adjust the handle's position by 90 degrees.
Allow several seconds to elapse and avoid rotating the component more than 90 degrees incrementally, permitting the Anti-Clamp feature and settling time to facilitate the process.

Step 4 | Front Panel Assembly

Step 4 image
Carefully raise the front panel by applying upward force with one suction cup.
Position a suction cup directly on the display surface, situated slightly higher than the home button's location.
Ensure a firm contact between the cup and the screen surface to guarantee a leakproof connection.
To facilitate suction cup attachment on a severely cracked display, apply a sheet of clear packing tape across the damage; as an alternative, a robust adhesive tape can be substituted for the suction cup. Should these methods prove ineffective, secure the suction cup directly to the fractured screen using superglue.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Using one hand to secure the iPhone, lift the suction cup vertically to gently create a small gap between the front panel and the rear enclosure.
Exercise caution and use steady, even pressure when installing the display assembly, as its fit is considerably more snug than typical device components.
Carefully separate the rear case from the display assembly by gently levering it downwards with a plastic opening tool, maintaining upward traction on the display with the suction cup.
To release the front panel assembly from the rear case, carefully disengage the multiple retaining clips by employing both the suction cup and plastic opening tool as needed.

To prevent the strips from adhering and tearing, maintain their flatness and avoid creases throughout this step.
Gently draw the adhesive strip, extending it downwards along the iPhone's length, separating it from the battery surface with a slow, controlled motion.
Gently extend the strip to relieve tension before applying additional force; if you do not perceive any give, reduce the pulling pressure to prevent breakage.
Gently draw the adhesive strip away from the phone's bottom edge, maintaining a shallow angle to prevent the adhesive from catching on any nearby parts.
Avoid applying pressure to the battery while removing the strip.
Apply steady, gradual force to the strip, noting that it will extend significantly beyond its initial size; maintain this slow pulling action until the strip detaches and clears from beneath the battery.
Should the battery's adhesive strips tear apart while being detached, carefully use your fingers or a tool with a rounded, non-piercing tip to gather any leftover adhesive material, then proceed with the separation.
Should the adhesive securing the battery tear or become inaccessible during removal, carefully eliminate any remaining adhesive segments before continuing with the subsequent steps.

Carefully separate the remaining battery adhesive strip from the battery's lower edge.
Carefully lift the battery's adhesive tab, separating it from the battery surface while permitting the adhesive strip to gradually detach from the space between the battery and the rear case.
To prevent the battery from being ejected unexpectedly, maintain firm pressure on it with one hand as the last adhesive strip is removed.
Gently draw outward until the adhesive strip fully detaches from the device.
Should the three adhesive strips detach cleanly, proceed to step 24; however, if the adhesive tears during removal and fragments remain inaccessible beneath the battery, carefully apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol with a concentration exceeding 90% directly beneath the battery's edge, targeting the location of the detached adhesive.
Allow approximately one minute for the isopropyl alcohol to soften the adhesive securing the battery, then carefully separate the battery from the device casing using the spudger’s flat edge.
To prevent damage, avoid using excessive force when removing the battery. Should the battery remain stuck, add a small amount of additional alcohol to dissolve more of the adhesive. Ensure the pry tool does not damage or penetrate the battery casing during the separation process.
Avoid applying force to the logic board to prevent irreversible harm to your iPhone. Exercise caution when prying near the battery's upper edge, specifically close to the volume up button and mute switch, as this area houses the audio controls cable—a component affixed to the rear case directly below the battery—and damage to it could occur.
If the battery remains adhered, proceed to the following instructions.

Step 23 | Alternative methods to unstick the battery from the case

Step 23 image
To free a battery adhered to the back cover, apply heat using an iOpener or a hair dryer, focusing on the area immediately behind the battery.
Carefully raise the battery from its compartment using a plastic opening tool.
Exposure to excessive heat poses a risk of battery ignition within the iPhone.
For separating the battery from the rear case, dental floss can be substituted; however, a guitar string, specifically a 0.009 E string from a 12-string guitar set, provides greater separation force.
Using floss or string, gently work it between the battery and the device casing, employing a back-and-forth, sawing action to break the adhesive bond.

Step 24

Step 24 image
Disconnecting the iPhone's internal battery requires its complete removal.
Carefully slide the protective plastic covering off the new battery, ensuring you do not snag or damage the ribbon cable.
To prevent damage, ensure any residual alcohol solution is completely removed by wiping with a clean cloth or by permitting full evaporation before proceeding with the new battery installation.
To confirm correct positioning within its designated space, briefly plug the battery connector back into the logic board's socket prior to securing the new battery.
Secure the battery in place, then sever its electrical connection before proceeding with the remaining assembly steps.
To secure a battery lacking factory-applied adhesive, follow the instructions in this guide for adhesive strip replacement.
Following reassembly, execute a complete system reset to proactively avoid potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.
