iPhone 4S Dock Connector Replacement

Follow these instructions to substitute the dock connector assembly, encompassing both the dock connector and the lower microphone.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

To start, ensure the iPhone's battery level is below 25%; a fully charged lithium-ion battery presents a fire or explosion hazard if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage to components, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to starting the repair process.
Using a Pentalobe P2 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.
To prevent damage, ensure the driver is fully engaged with the Pentalobe screws before turning, as these screws are prone to stripping.

Apply pressure to the back cover, directing it upwards against the device's upper rim.
Expect a displacement of approximately 2 millimeters.

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the three retaining screws on the motor assembly to a torque of 3.5 inch-pounds, ensuring the motor remains securely affixed and avoiding over-tightening that could damage the threads.Carefully disconnect the battery connector from its socket on the logic board by leveraging it upwards with a plastic opening tool.
Using the tool, gently pry the connector's metal cover away from the loudspeaker enclosure, initiating the separation from its lower edge.
To detach the battery connector, move it straight up away from the logic board; avoid any lateral pressure.
Avoid applying force to the battery connector's housing, as separation from the logic board is possible due to only four tiny solder joints securing it.

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four retaining screws on the motor assembly to a torque of 3.5 inch-pounds, ensuring not to overtighten and potentially damage the threads.Ensure the pressure contact is correctly situated during reassembly, placing it atop the Philips screw post as indicated, with the gold contact oriented toward the battery connector.
To prevent wireless interference caused by oils from handling, thoroughly clean the pressure contact using a degreaser like Windex or isopropyl alcohol.

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four retaining screws on the motor assembly to a torque of 3.5 inch-pounds, ensuring that you do not overtighten and damage the threads; observe the warning label regarding potential pinch points.Using a plastic opening tool, gently slide the tip into the gap separating the battery from the iPhone's outer casing, positioning the tool close to the device's lower edge.
Using the plastic opening tool, carefully slide it along the right side of the battery, lifting gently at multiple locations to release the adhesive holding the battery in place within the outer case, ensuring complete separation.
To loosen a firmly adhered battery, carefully introduce a small amount of isopropyl alcohol with a concentration exceeding 90% beneath its perimeter.
Allow roughly 60 seconds for the isopropyl alcohol to reduce the bond strength of the adhesive.
Carefully raise the battery using the flat, plastic tip of a specialized opening tool.
To avoid damage, do not use excessive force when removing the battery. If the battery remains stuck, add additional drops of alcohol to dissolve more of the adhesive. Ensure the pry tool does not bend, break, or penetrate the battery casing during removal.
To prevent damage, ensure all traces of the alcohol solution are removed by wiping with a clean cloth or by permitting complete evaporation before proceeding with the new battery installation.

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the three retaining screws on the motor assembly to a torque of 3.5 inch-pounds, ensuring not to overtighten and potentially strip the threads; observe caution to avoid pinching fingers.Gently lift the battery away from its adhesive backing by grasping the visible, transparent plastic tab.
Exercise caution when drawing back the plastic pull tab, as excessive force may cause it to tear.
Disconnect the power source by detaching the battery.
Carefully discard the protective plastic packaging that accompanied the new battery by gently separating it from the ribbon cable.
Before installation, gently form the battery's included cable to match its intended contours.
To confirm correct positioning during the new battery installation, briefly attach the battery connector to the device; after securing the battery with adhesive, detach the connector.
Following reassembly, execute a full system reset to proactively avoid potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.

Step 10 | Speaker Enclosure Assembly

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four M4x8 pan head screws securing the fan assembly to the heatsink, ensuring a torque of 4.5 in-lbs to prevent damage.Using appropriate tools, detach the logic board cover that protects the dock connector cable by unscrewing all screws holding it in place.
Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove a single screw with a 1.5 mm head.
Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten a single screw with a 1.2 mm head.
Carefully detach the metal cover protecting the dock connector cable.

Step 11

Carefully lift the dock cable connector from its corresponding socket on the logic board using the flat edge of a plastic opening tool.

Carefully detach the dock connector cable from both the adhesive holding it to the logic board and the adhesive securing it to the speaker enclosure's side.

  1. Carefully pry the speaker enclosure assembly free from the device casing with a plastic opening tool, exercising caution to avoid bending or breaking the EMI fingers on the Wi-Fi antenna.
    Carefully detach the speaker enclosure assembly.
  2. Ensure the Wi-Fi grounding fingers are positioned beneath the lip of the iPhone’s metal case, referencing the third image for correct placement, prior to tightening the speaker enclosure assembly’s screws.
    To prevent wireless interference, thoroughly clean all metal surfaces where the Wi-Fi antenna grounding fingers meet the iPhone case using a degreaser like Windex or isopropyl alcohol prior to reassembling the device.

Step 17 | Dock Connector

  • Carefully peel back any protective tape that may be covering a dock connector screw.

    Apply upward force to the hinged retaining flap, ensuring you do not apply pressure to the socket.
