iPhone 4 Verizon Rear Camera Replacement

Follow these instructions to detach the iPhone's main rear-facing camera module.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

Step 1 image
To start the repair, ensure the iPhone's battery level is below 25%; a fully charged lithium-ion battery poses a fire or explosion risk if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to commencing the repair process.
To detach the back cover, examine it carefully; it's secured with either two #000 Phillips screws or Apple’s unique 5-Point "Pentalobe" screws. Confirm the screw type and use the matching screwdriver for successful removal.
Using either a Pentalobe or Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.

Apply pressure to the back cover, directing the force upwards along the top edge.
Expect a displacement of approximately 2 millimeters.

Step 3

Step 3 image
To detach the rear panel, either gently raise it by applying pressure with your fingers or secure a Small Suction Cup to the panel and lift.
Exercise caution to avoid harming the plastic clips affixed to the rear panel.

Step 4 | Battery

Step 4 image
If a 1.5 mm Phillips screw is found fastening the battery connector to the logic board, detach it.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Carefully lift the battery connector away from its connection on the logic board using the tip of a plastic opening tool, applying gentle force.
Exercise extreme caution when releasing the battery connector, ensuring you apply force only to the connector itself, as applying pressure to the logic board socket risks irreparable damage.
Carefully detach the metal clip, which secures the antenna connector.

  1. To release the battery from its adhesive backing, grasp the visible, transparent plastic tab and lift upwards.
Should the retaining tab fracture prior to battery separation, introduce a small quantity of isopropyl alcohol with a concentration exceeding 90% beneath the battery's edge. Allow approximately one minute for the solvent to degrade the adhesive bond, then gently insert a spudger to disengage the adhesive and facilitate battery removal.
Avoid applying force elsewhere to prevent damage; instead, if the battery remains adhered, add additional drops of alcohol to soften the adhesive. Ensure the pry tool does not puncture or bend the battery during removal.
To prevent damage, ensure all traces of the alcohol solution are removed by wiping with a clean cloth or permitting complete evaporation before proceeding with the new battery installation.
Disconnect the power source by detaching the battery.
  2. Carefully discard the protective plastic packaging that accompanied the new battery by gently separating it from the ribbon cable.
To prevent wireless interference, thoroughly remove any oils or residue from surfaces that will contact each other during reassembly, using a solvent like Windex.
Following reassembly, execute a full system reset to proactively avoid potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.

Step 7 | Rear Camera

Step 7 image
  • Using the appropriate screwdriver, detach the five screws.
Use three Phillips screws, each measuring 1.3 mm.
Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove a single screw with a 1.5 mm head.
Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove a single screw with a 2.4 mm head.

  1. Carefully detach the cable cover by gently prying upwards from the edge closest to the iPhone's top.
To access the cable, disengage the tabs molded into the electromagnetic interference shield on the logic board, then detach the shield from the iPhone.

  1. Carefully lift the rear camera connector away from its socket on the logic board using the tip of a plastic opening tool.
Exercise caution to avoid damaging adjacent parts of the logic board while applying upward force.
Carefully detach the rear camera assembly from the iPhone.
To prevent surface damage, exercise caution and avoid contact with the display assembly's rear side following the rear-facing camera's detachment.
