iPhone 4 Verizon Power Button Replacement

Follow these instructions to substitute the iPhone's external power button, which is made of metal.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

To start, ensure the iPhone's battery has depleted to less than 25% capacity; a fully charged lithium-ion battery presents a fire or explosion hazard if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage to components, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to starting the repair process.
To detach the back casing, inspect it to determine if it secures with two #000 Phillips head screws or Apple's proprietary 5-Point "Pentalobe" screws; use the corresponding screwdriver to avoid damage.
Using either a Pentalobe or Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.

Apply pressure to the back cover, directing it upwards against the device's upper boundary.
Expect a displacement of approximately 2 millimeters.

Step 3

To release the rear panel, apply upward pressure with your fingers while gripping the back of the iPhone, or secure a Small Suction Cup to the panel and lift.
Exercise caution to prevent harm to the plastic clips affixed to the rear panel.

Step 4 | Battery

If a 1.5 mm Phillips screw is found fastening the battery connector to the logic board, detach it.

Carefully lift the battery connector away from its connection on the logic board using the tip of a plastic opening tool, applying gentle force.
Exercise extreme caution to lift solely on the battery connector, avoiding any upward force applied to the logic board socket; damage to the socket, potentially rendering it unusable, can result from incorrect prying.
Carefully detach the metal clip, which secures the antenna connector.

  1. To release the battery from its adhesive backing, grasp the visible, transparent plastic tab and lift upwards.
    Should the battery retaining tab fracture prior to separation, introduce a small amount of isopropyl alcohol—concentration exceeding 90%—along the battery's edge to dissolve the adhesive. Allow approximately one minute for the solvent to penetrate and reduce adhesive strength, then gently use a spudger to disengage the battery.
    Avoid applying force elsewhere, as this could result in damage. Gentle separation of the battery is essential; excessive leverage is discouraged. To aid in removal, additional alcohol can be applied to dissolve the adhesive if necessary. Ensure the pry tool does not compromise the battery's integrity by puncturing or deforming it.
    To prevent damage, ensure any residual alcohol solution is completely removed by wiping or by letting it evaporate fully prior to battery installation.
    Disconnect the power source by carefully extracting the battery.
  2. Carefully discard the protective plastic packaging that accompanied the new battery by gently separating it from the ribbon cable.
    To prevent wireless signal disruption, use a de-greaser like Windex to thoroughly clean all metal surfaces that will make contact during reassembly, as oils from handling can create interference.
    Following reassembly, execute a full system reset to mitigate potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.

Step 7 | Dock Connector Cable

  • Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the dock connector cable from the logic board by unscrewing the two fasteners held in place by 1.8 mm screws.
  • Carefully detach the flexible metal cover protecting the dock connector cable.

Step 8

  1. Carefully lift the dock cable connector from its corresponding socket on the logic board, utilizing the flat edge of a plastic opening tool.

Step 9

  1. Carefully detach the dock connector cable from both the adhesive holding it to the logic board and the adhesive securing it to the speaker enclosure's side.

Step 10

  1. Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the pressure contact from the logic board, taking care to unscrew the 1.6 mm fastener located close to the vibrator.
    Disconnect the pressure contact.

  1. Carefully lift the cellular antenna cable connector from its corresponding socket on the logic board, utilizing the edge of a plastic opening tool for leverage.
  2. Carefully maneuver the cellular antenna cable, freeing it from the metal finger retainers secured to the logic board.
  3. Before securing the antenna wire, meticulously align the circular connector on the wire’s end with its corresponding connector on the motherboard, ensuring it is centered; any misalignment during connection risks irreparable damage to both connector components.

Step 12 | Rear Camera

  • Using the appropriate screwdriver, detach the five screws.
    • Use three Phillips head screws, each measuring 1.3 mm.
    • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove a single screw with a 1.5 mm head.
    • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove a single screw with a 2.4 mm head.

Step 13

  1. Carefully detach the cable cover by gently prying up the edge closest to the iPhone's top.
  2. Carefully disengage the cable cover tabs from the slots formed within the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shield on the logic board, then detach the cover from the iPhone.

  1. Carefully lift the rear camera connector from its socket on the logic board using the tip of a plastic opening tool.
  2. Exercise caution to prevent damage to adjacent parts of the printed circuit board while applying upward force.
  3. Carefully detach the rear camera assembly from the iPhone.
  4. To prevent surface damage, exercise caution and avoid contact with the display assembly's rear side following camera detachment.

Step 15 | Logic Board

  1. Carefully detach the five connectors located at the logic board's upper edge, observing a specific sequence.
    • The flexible cable connecting the headphone jack and volume controls.
    • The cable connecting to the power button.
    • Connect the front camera's ribbon cable.
    • The flexible ribbon cable connecting the display’s touch sensor to the mainboard is the digitizer cable.
    • Connect the display data cable.
  2. Carefully leverage the connectors of the cables upward and away from their sockets on the logic board using the thin edge of a plastic opening tool.
  3. Exercise caution to avoid damaging the tiny, sensitive surface mount components while detaching the cables.

Step 16

Using a Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the 1.5 mm screw situated close to the headphone jack.

Step 17

Carefully detach the grounding clip from the logic board by raising it, ensuring complete removal from the iPhone.

Step 18

Carefully detach the Wi-Fi antenna cable connector from the logic board’s edge using a plastic opening tool.
Before securing the WiFi ribbon connector to the motherboard, meticulously align the circular end of the ribbon cable, ensuring it's precisely centered over its corresponding connector on the board; any misalignment during pressure application risks irreparable damage to both connector components.

A Phillips screw, located close to the power button, may be concealed by a tape; if so, detach the tape.

Step 20

Using a Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the logic board by removing the 2.5 mm screw located close to the power button.
Using the appropriate tool, detach the 4.8 mm standoff screw located close to the headphone jack.
Employ a standoff screwdriver or bit to extract standoff screws.
If a dedicated tool isn't available, a small flathead screwdriver can be carefully employed; however, exercise heightened awareness to prevent slippage and potential harm to nearby parts.

Step 21

Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the 3.4 mm screw located close to the vibrator motor.
Using appropriate tools, detach the two screws, each measuring 3.6 mm, positioned on the logic board's edge closest to where the battery is located.

Step 22

Starting near the speaker, gently raise the logic board and maneuver it horizontally, sliding it out from beneath the iPhone's top edge.
Carefully detach the logic board from the device enclosure.
To prevent grounding problems, thoroughly clean all metal surfaces where the logic board components meet, excluding connector pins, using a solvent like Windex or isopropyl alcohol prior to reassembling the device. Finger oils can interfere with electrical conductivity.
To avoid display cable damage, a small, rectangular rubber pad located on the logic board’s upper edge serves as a buffer; ensure its proper placement during logic board reinstallation if it detaches.

Step 23

Carefully retain the tiny grounding tab located close to the power button, as it’s essential for the rear camera’s proper function.

Step 24 | Power Button

Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the power button bracket from the outer case by unscrewing the two fasteners held in place by 2.0 mm screws.
Carefully displace the power button bracket a small amount, ensuring it clears the outer case.

Step 25

Carefully extract the power button from the iPhone using tweezers.
Ensure the power button is positioned correctly during reassembly; the metal loop must point downwards, and the outer edges should be uppermost.
