iPhone 4 Verizon Power Button Cable Replacement

Follow these instructions to substitute the electronic power button assembly, which incorporates the ambient light and proximity sensors.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

To start, ensure the iPhone's battery is depleted to less than 25% capacity; a fully charged lithium-ion battery presents a fire and/or explosion hazard if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to starting the repair process.
To detach the back casing, inspect it to determine if it secures with two #000 Phillips head screws or Apple's proprietary 5-Point "Pentalobe" screws; use the corresponding screwdriver to avoid damage during removal.
Using either a Pentalobe or Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.

Expect a displacement of approximately 2 millimeters.

Exercise caution to prevent harm to the plastic clips affixed to the rear panel.

Step 4 | Battery

If a 1.5 mm Phillips screw is used to attach the battery connector to the logic board, detach it.

Exercise extreme caution when releasing the battery connector, ensuring you apply force only to the connector itself, as applying pressure to the logic board socket risks irreparable damage.
Carefully detach the metal clip, which secures the antenna connector.

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four mounting screws securing the fan assembly to the motor housing, ensuring each is snug but not over-tightened to prevent damage; observe polarity markings if present.
To release the battery from its adhesive backing, grasp the visible, transparent plastic tab and lift upwards.
Should the retaining tab fracture prior to battery separation, introduce a small quantity of isopropyl alcohol with a concentration exceeding 90% beneath the battery's edge. Allow approximately one minute for the solvent to dissolve the adhesive bond. Then, gently insert a spudger beneath the battery tab to disengage the adhesive.
To avoid damage, do not force the battery removal; instead, if the adhesive remains strong, add additional drops of isopropyl alcohol to loosen it. Ensure the pry tool does not puncture or bend the battery during the process.
To prevent damage, ensure any residual alcohol solution is completely removed by wiping with a clean cloth or by permitting full evaporation before proceeding with the new battery installation.
Disconnect the power source by detaching the battery.
Carefully discard the protective plastic packaging that accompanied the new battery by gently separating it from the ribbon cable.
To prevent potential wireless interference stemming from oils, thoroughly remove any residue from metal surfaces that will be in contact during reassembly, using a cleaning agent like Windex.
Following reassembly, execute a factory reset to mitigate potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.

Step 7 | Dock Connector Cable

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four mounting screws securing the fan assembly to the motor housing, ensuring each is snug but not overtightened to prevent damage; observe a torque of 6 in-lbs per screw.
Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the dock connector cable from the logic board by unscrewing the two fasteners held in place by 1.8 mm screws.
Carefully detach the flexible metal cover protecting the dock connector cable.

Step 8

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the three retaining screws on the motor assembly to a torque of 3.5 inch-pounds; ensure even pressure to prevent damage and avoid over-tightening.
Carefully lift the dock cable connector from its corresponding socket on the logic board, employing the flat edge of a plastic opening tool for leverage.

Step 9

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four retaining screws on the motor assembly to a torque of 3.5 inch-pounds, ensuring not to overtighten and potentially damage the threads.Carefully detach the dock connector cable from both the adhesive holding it to the logic board and the adhesive securing it to the speaker enclosure’s side.

Carefully tighten the M6 x 1.0 screws to a torque of 5.0 Nm using a 4mm Allen wrench, ensuring no damage occurs to the surrounding components and observing the safety precautions outlined in section 3.2.
Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the pressure contact from the logic board's vicinity of the vibrator with the 1.6 mm screw that holds it in place.
Carefully detach the pressure contact.

  • Carefully lift the cellular antenna cable connector from its corresponding socket on the logic board using the tip of a plastic opening tool.
  • Carefully maneuver the cellular antenna cable, freeing it from the metal finger retainers secured to the logic board.
  • Ensure the circular connector on the antenna wire's end is precisely aligned with its corresponding connector on the motherboard before applying any force.
    Improper handling risks irreversible damage to the connector's two sections.

Step 12 | Rear Camera

  • Using a screwdriver, detach the five screws.
    1. Use three Phillips screws, each measuring 1.3 mm.
    2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove a single screw with a 1.5 mm head.
    3. A Phillips-head screw, measuring 2.4 millimeters, is required.

Step 13

  • Carefully detach the cable cover by gently prying upwards from the edge closest to the iPhone's top.
  • Release the cable cover by disengaging the tabs molded into the electromagnetic interference shield on the logic board, then detach the cover from the iPhone.

  • To prevent surface damage, exercise caution and avoid contact with the display assembly's rear surface following the rear-facing camera's detachment.

Step 15 | Logic Board

  • To prevent damage, detach the five connectors located at the logic board’s upper edge, observing a specific sequence.
    1. The flexible cable connecting the headphone jack and volume controls
    2. The flexible cable connecting the power button to the main circuit board is referred to as the power button cable.
    3. Connect the front camera's ribbon cable.
    4. The flexible ribbon cable connecting the display's touch sensor to the device's mainboard is referred to as the digitizer cable.
    5. Connect the display data cable.
    Carefully pry the connectors of the cables upward and away from the logic board's sockets, utilizing the thin edge of a plastic opening tool to avoid damage.
    Exercise caution to avoid damaging the miniature surface mount components while disconnecting the cables.

Step 16

Using a Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the 1.5 mm screw located close to the headphone jack.

Carefully detach the grounding clip from the logic board by raising it, then take it out of the iPhone.

Step 18

Carefully separate the Wi-Fi antenna cable connector from the logic board using the tip of a plastic opening tool.
Before securing the WiFi ribbon cable to the motherboard, meticulously align the circular connector at the ribbon's end with its corresponding connector on the board; any misalignment while applying pressure risks irreparable damage to both connection components.

Carefully peel away any tape obstructing the Phillips screw located close to the power button.

Step 20

Using a Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the logic board by removing the 2.5 mm screw located close to the power button.
Using the appropriate tool, detach the 4.8 mm standoff screw located close to the headphone jack.
Employ a standoff screwdriver or bit to extract standoff screws.
If a dedicated tool isn't available, a small flathead screwdriver can be carefully employed; however, exercise heightened awareness to prevent slippage and potential harm to nearby parts.

Step 21

Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the 3.4 mm screw located close to the vibrator motor.
Using appropriate tools, detach the two screws, each measuring 3.6 mm, positioned on the logic board's edge closest to where the battery is located.

Step 22

Gently raise the logic board, starting at the speaker enclosure end, and move it horizontally away from the iPhone’s top edge.
Carefully detach the logic board, ensuring all connections are released.
To prevent grounding problems, thoroughly remove any oils from surfaces where metal parts of the logic board touch each other—excluding connector pins—using a cleaning agent like Windex or isopropyl alcohol prior to reassembling.
To avoid display cable damage, a small, rectangular rubber pad located on the logic board's upper edge must be properly aligned during reassembly; ensure its correct placement when reinstalling the logic board if it detaches.

Step 23

Carefully retain the tiny grounding tab located close to the power button, which is essential for the rear camera's proper operation.

Step 24 | Earpiece Speaker

Carefully separate the earpiece speaker from the foam adhesive using the edge of a plastic opening tool.
To avoid damaging the earpiece speaker if you intend to reinstall it, exercise care to prevent detachment of the foam adhesive holding it in place on the iPhone's housing.
Carefully detach the earpiece speaker component.
To prevent damage, secure the ribbon cable with a separate tool while carefully separating the speaker, as it may be affixed with adhesive.

Step 25 | Power Button Cable

Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the power button bracket from the outer case by unscrewing the two fasteners held in place by 2.0 mm screws.
Carefully displace the power button cable bracket a small amount, ensuring it clears the outer case.
Should the power button become detached, ensure proper reinstallation by aligning the metal loop so it points downwards and positioning the outer edges upward.

Step 26

Carefully lift the bracket situated directly over the earpiece speaker cavity by inserting the edge of a plastic opening tool and applying gentle upward pressure.
The bracket is secured within the outer case and is not designed for removal.

Step 27

Carefully lift the power button cable away from the outer case's surface using a plastic opening tool, being mindful of its delicate construction.
Carefully disconnect the power button cable from the iPhone, ensuring no damage occurs to the connector or surrounding components.

Step 28

Carefully detach the metal bracket securing the power button switch by gently prying with a plastic opening tool.
Secure the bracket to the new power button cable, ensuring its placement mirrors the original configuration.
