iPhone 4 Front Facing Camera Replacement

This document details the procedure for substituting the front-facing, small VGA camera; it is also applicable for removing both cameras when required by facility regulations.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

To start, ensure the iPhone's battery is depleted to less than 25% capacity; a fully charged lithium-ion battery poses a fire or explosion risk if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to starting the repair process.
Examine the iPhone 4's rear cover to identify its screw type: either two #000 Phillips screws or Apple's 5-Point "Pentalobe" screws, as shown in the second image. Confirm you possess the corresponding screwdriver to facilitate removal.
Using either a Pentalobe or Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.
To prevent damage, ensure the Pentalobe driver is fully engaged before turning when removing the screws.

Step 2

Apply pressure to the back cover, directing it upwards against the device's upper boundary.
Expect a displacement of approximately 2 millimeters.

To release the rear panel, either gently separate it from the iPhone casing by applying pressure with your fingers or secure a Small Suction Cup to the panel and lift.
Exercise caution to prevent harm to the plastic clips affixed to the rear panel.
Before securing the new rear panel, peel away the adhesive backing from the interior surface of the camera lens and also remove the sticker covering the adjacent large black area.

Step 4 | Battery

Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the battery connector from the logic board by unscrewing the one 2.5 mm screw that holds it in place.
Depending on the model, a second screw secures the contact pad situated directly above the screw highlighted in red within the image.

Carefully lift the battery connector away from its connection on the logic board, employing a plastic opening tool to avoid damage.
To avoid connector damage, apply separation force to the upper and lower edges of the bracket, as side access is limited.
Exercise extreme caution when releasing the battery connector, ensuring you apply force only to the connector itself, as applying pressure to the logic board socket risks irreparable damage.
Carefully detach the metal clip, which secures the antenna connector.

  1. Carefully extract the battery from the iPhone by utilizing the provided transparent plastic tab for a gentle upward motion.
    Should the battery retaining tab fracture prior to separation, introduce a small quantity of isopropyl alcohol with a concentration exceeding 90% between the battery and the device casing. Allow approximately sixty seconds for the solvent to dissolve the adhesive bond. Then, gently insert a spudger beneath the battery tab to detach the adhesive.
    To prevent damage, avoid prying on any areas other than the intended locations; excessive force when removing the battery is not recommended. Should the adhesive still resist separation, add a small number of additional alcohol drops to soften it. Ensure the pry tool does not bend, break, or penetrate the battery casing during the process.
    To prevent damage, ensure any residual alcohol solution is completely removed by wiping with a clean cloth or by permitting full evaporation prior to battery installation.
    Carefully discard the protective plastic packaging that accompanied the new battery by gently separating it from the ribbon cable.
    Ensure the red contact clip is correctly situated adjacent to the battery connector prior to reattaching the battery connector.
    To prevent wireless interference, use a de-greaser like Windex to thoroughly clean all metal surfaces that will make contact during reassembly, as oils from handling can negatively impact wireless performance.
    Following reassembly, execute a full system reset to proactively avoid potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.

Step 7 | Logic Board

  1. Employing a SIM card eject tool or a straightened paperclip, release the SIM card and its corresponding tray.
    Applying considerable pressure might be necessary.
    Using appropriate tools, extract the SIM card and its associated tray from the device.

  • Using a screwdriver, detach the two screws.
    Use a Phillips head screwdriver, size 1.2 millimeters.
    Use a Phillips screwdriver with a 1.6 mm tip.
  • Carefully detach the flexible steel cover protecting the dock connector cable inside the iPhone.
    To prevent wireless interference, thoroughly remove any oils or residue from all metal surfaces that will make contact during reassembly of the dock connector cable cover, using a cleaning agent like Windex.

  1. Carefully lift the dock cable connector's terminals from the logic board at both ends, utilizing an iPod opening tool to avoid damage.

    Carefully detach the dock ribbon cable from the logic board, avoiding any undue pressure that could damage it.

Carefully lift the lower antenna connector from its socket on the logic board using a plastic opening tool.

Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the logic board from the inner case by unscrewing the 1.9 mm screw located at its base.

Step 13

Using a screwdriver, detach the five screws that fasten the Wi-Fi antenna assembly to the logic board.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver with a 2.3 mm tip.
  • Use Phillips head screwdrivers with a 1.6 mm tip.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver with a 1.4 mm tip.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver with a 4.8 mm tip.
To prevent damage and confusion during reassembly, initially install the 4.8 mm Philips screw, followed by the 2.3 mm screw, safeguarding the LCD and digitizer from potential issues.
Ensure the 4.8 mm Philips screw is properly positioned during reassembly, as it serves as the Wi-Fi antenna ground; incorrect placement frequently causes poor Wi-Fi reception.

Carefully separate the Wi-Fi antenna from the logic board by gently prying up its top edge with an iPod opening tool.
Carefully detach the Wi-Fi module's retaining clips from the inner frame by gently levering them with a spudger tip.
To maintain proper Wi-Fi functionality, carefully detach the antenna during disassembly, ensuring the 4.8mm screw and its associated metal clips, located on the cover’s top edge, are not misplaced; their loss is a common cause of subsequent Wi-Fi issues.
To prevent potential wireless interference, thoroughly remove any oils from the connector cover's metal-to-metal contact areas using a de-greaser like Windex prior to reassembly; however, avoid applying the de-greaser directly to the connectors.

Employing an iPod opening tool, gently raise the rear camera connector from its socket on the logic board.
Carefully detach the rear camera assembly.

Carefully peel away the small, round, white label—which serves as both a warranty indicator and a water damage sensor—to access the screw located adjacent to the battery release lever.
Carefully peel back the sticker to access and then unscrew the 2.4 mm Phillips screw located beneath it.

Step 17

Carefully lift each of the specified connectors from their corresponding sockets on the logic board, employing the edge of a plastic opening tool to avoid damage.
  • Carefully release the digitizer cable by gently levering it upwards from underneath.
  • Carefully release the LCD cable by gently levering it upwards from its secured position at the lower edge.
  • Carefully detach the cable connecting the headphone jack and volume button assembly by gently levering it upwards from the top surface.
  • Carefully detach the microphone/sleep button cable by gently levering it upwards from its position at the top of the device.
  • Carefully detach the front camera cable by gently releasing its retention clips from above.

Step 18

Using the appropriate tool, detach the 4.8 mm standoff screw located close to the headphone jack.
To detach standoff screws, utilize a standoff screwdriver or a compatible bit.
If a dedicated tool isn't available, a small flathead screwdriver can be carefully employed; however, exercise heightened awareness to prevent slippage and potential harm to nearby parts.
To ensure proper alignment, position the Wi-Fi shield—previously removed in step 13—so that it is level with the headphone jack and flush with the device frame; secure it using this standoff, as its height dictates the shield's final position, and failure to properly tighten it will prevent the rear cover from sliding into place during step 2.
To guarantee proper alignment during reassembly, position the motherboard's edge beneath the designated standoff, as indicated by the circle, to allow for screw installation.
Confirm the tiny rubber spacer, positioned atop the motherboard, is correctly installed during reassembly.
Absence of this component creates a risk of damage to the adjacent ribbon cables on the motherboard.

Step 19

Detach the iPhone's logic board with caution, ensuring no cables are snagged during the process.
Exercise caution to avoid harming the delicate, gold-colored projection—identified by a red mark and located close to the uppermost portion—due to its inherent fragility.
Ensure the lower antenna cable remains clear of the logic board during reassembly to prevent pinching or damage.

Step 20 | Front Facing Camera

Carefully pry the steel front camera retainer away from the front camera using the edge of a plastic opening tool.
Carefully detach the front camera securing clip.
To ensure proper reinstallation, align the clip’s tabs so they face outward, fitting into the corresponding metal slots.

Step 21

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four mounting screws securing the fan assembly to the motor housing, ensuring each is snug but not over-tightened to avoid damaging the plastic threads; observe a torque of 4 in-lbs per screw.Gently detach the front camera assembly from the iPhone, ensuring no damage occurs.
Reattaching the front camera retainer can be easier with the precision of tweezers.
