iPhone 4 Cellular Antenna Replacement

This guide details the procedure for substituting the cellular antenna, typically affixed to the speaker enclosure.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

To start the repair, ensure the iPhone's battery has a charge level of less than 25%; a fully charged lithium-ion battery poses a fire or explosion risk if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to starting the repair process.
Determine if your iPhone 4's back cover uses two #000 Phillips screws or Apple’s 5-Point 'Pentalobe' screws—refer to the second image for clarification. Using the appropriate screwdriver is essential for successful removal.
Using either a Pentalobe or Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.
To prevent damage, ensure the Pentalobe driver is fully engaged before turning when removing the screws.

Apply pressure to the back cover, directing it upwards against the device's upper rim.
Expect a displacement of approximately 2 millimeters.

Step 3

Step 3 image
To release the rear panel, either gently raise it by applying pressure with your fingers or secure a Small Suction Cup to the panel and lift.
Exercise caution to prevent harm to the plastic clips affixed to the rear panel.
Before attaching a replacement rear panel, peel away the adhesive backing from the protective plastic covering the camera lens’s interior surface, and also remove the sticker adhered to the large black area positioned close to the lens.

Step 4 | Battery

Step 4 image
Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the battery connector from the logic board by unscrewing the single 2.5 mm screw that holds it in place.
Certain models incorporate a second screw; this secures the contact pad situated directly above the screw highlighted in red within the accompanying image.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Carefully disconnect the battery connector from its socket on the logic board by leveraging it upwards with a plastic opening tool.
To avoid connector damage, apply separation force to the upper and lower portions of the bracket, as side access is limited.
Exercise extreme caution when releasing the battery connector, ensuring you apply force only to the connector itself, as applying pressure to the logic board socket risks irreparable damage.
Carefully detach the metal clip, which secures the antenna connector.

Step 6

  1. Carefully extract the battery from the iPhone by utilizing the provided transparent plastic tab for a gentle upward motion.
Should the battery retaining tab fracture prior to separation, introduce a small amount of isopropyl alcohol with a concentration exceeding 90% beneath the fractured tab's edge. Allow approximately one minute for the alcohol to dissolve the adhesive bond. Then, gently use a spudger to disengage the adhesive and free the battery.
To avoid damage, do not attempt to dislodge the battery using leverage elsewhere. If the adhesive bond remains strong, add additional drops of alcohol to soften it. Ensure the pry tool does not puncture or bend the battery during removal.
To prevent damage, ensure all traces of the alcohol solution are removed by wiping with a clean cloth or by permitting complete evaporation before proceeding with the new battery installation.
Carefully detach the protective plastic packaging from the new battery by gently separating it from the ribbon cable.
Ensure the red contact clip is correctly situated adjacent to the battery connector prior to reattaching the battery connector.
To prevent wireless interference, thoroughly remove any oils or residue from all metal surfaces that will be in contact during reassembly, using a cleaning agent like Windex.
Following reassembly, execute a full system reset to proactively avoid potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.

Step 7 | Speaker Enclosure Assembly

  • Using a screwdriver, detach the two screws.
Use a Phillips screwdriver with a 1.2 mm tip.
Use a Phillips screwdriver with a 1.6 mm tip.
  • Carefully detach the flexible steel cover protecting the dock connector cable inside the iPhone.
  • To prevent wireless interference, thoroughly remove any oils or residue from all surfaces where the dock connector cable cover makes contact with other metal components, using a cleaning agent like Windex.

Step 8

  1. Detach the dock ribbon cable from both the logic board and the lower speaker enclosure, exercising caution to avoid damage.
Carefully detach the dock ribbon cable from the logic board, avoiding any undue pressure that could damage it.

Step 10

Step 10 image
  1. Carefully lift the lower antenna connector from its socket on the logic board using a plastic opening tool.

Step 11

Step 11 image
Using the appropriate screwdriver, detach the speaker enclosure assembly from the outer case by unscrewing the specified fasteners.
Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove a single screw with a 1.9 mm head.
A Phillips head screw, measuring 2.4 millimeters, is required.

Carefully detach the speaker enclosure assembly from the device housing by gently prying with a plastic opening tool, exercising caution to avoid bending or breaking the Wi-Fi antenna’s EMI fingers.
Detach the speaker enclosure, ensuring all fasteners are released.
Ensure the Wi-Fi grounding fingers are positioned beneath the lip of the iPhone’s metal case, referencing the third image for correct placement, prior to tightening the speaker enclosure assembly’s screws.
To prevent wireless interference, thoroughly clean all metal surfaces where the Wi-Fi antenna grounding fingers meet the iPhone case using a solvent like Windex or isopropyl alcohol; this step is essential before reassembling the device.

Step 13 | Cellular Antenna

Step 13 image
Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the antenna from the speaker enclosure by unscrewing the two screws that hold it in place.

Carefully separate the antenna from the speaker enclosure by sliding the edge of a plastic opening tool between the antenna and the enclosure, ensuring the tool is positioned beneath the antenna’s plastic mounting, and avoiding contact with the metal plate.
Carefully detach the cellular antenna from the speaker enclosure, avoiding damage to the gold bracket affixed to its side.
Disconnect and detach the cellular antenna.
Prior to adhering the cellular antenna, position the gold bracket onto the speaker enclosure's molded projection.
