iPhone 3GS Front Panel Replacement

Follow these instructions to detach and substitute the front panel and digitizer assembly on the device.Apple's 3GS iPhone.

Step 1 | Broken Glass

To avoid injury and contain shattered fragments while you work, secure any cracked display glass with tape.
Apply clear packing tape across the iPhone's screen surface, ensuring each strip overlaps the previous one to completely protect the display.
To prevent scattered glass fragments and maintain stability during the display separation process, this technique is essential.
To safeguard your vision, always use safety glasses when performing this repair, as fragments of glass may become dislodged.

Step 2 | Display

Step 2 image
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the two screws securing the dock connector.
Carefully sort the screws by size during disassembly, as they vary in length.

Step 3

Step 3 image
For improved handling and safety, detach the metal handle from the suction cup, as gripping the base provides a more secure hold.
Exercise extreme caution during iPhone disassembly to prevent damage to the delicate display cables.
A black display assembly is sealed to the silver front bezel by a rubber gasket, and disassembling these components necessitates applying moderate pressure.
Carefully lift the bottom edge of the display assembly by applying gentle upward force with a suction cup positioned close to the Home button.
When the display assembly's surface prevents proper suction cup attachment due to damage, secure it with a robust adhesive tape like duct tape.

Step 4

Step 4 image
Multiple cables secure the display assembly to the iPhone's internal components; avoid complete separation at this stage.
Tilt the display assembly upwards, achieving roughly a 45-degree angle.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Using one hand to secure the display assembly, employ a spudger with your other hand to carefully detach the ribbon cable identified as "1."
To connect ribbon cable "1", align the block at its terminus—the plug—and press it directly into the corresponding socket on the circuit board; no additional securing features are present.

Step 6

Step 6 image
Adjust the display assembly's orientation until it stands approximately perpendicular.
Removing the component provides improved clearance to facilitate disconnection of the remaining cables.
Carefully detach the ribbon cable identified with the label "2" using a spudger.

Step 7

Step 7 image

To release ribbon cable "3", disengage the FPC connector securing it, then carefully slide the cable free.
To release the cable, rotate the locking mechanism, located on the opposite insertion point, upward until it achieves a 90-degree angle.
Employ a plastic spudger to gently disengage the locking mechanism.
Because the flexible printed circuit (FPC) locking latch is fragile and visually distinct from the connector housing—usually a contrasting color—refer to the included image illustrating the connector in both open and closed states.
Carefully detach the ribbon cable from its connector, then proceed to remove the display assembly from the iPhone.
To correctly install or remove a ribbon cable from the flexible printed circuit (FPC) connector, the locking latch must be released; ensure it is open during attachment and detachment procedures.

Step 8

Step 8 image
Using a Phillips head screwdriver, size #00, detach the display assembly by unscrewing the single screw located at its corner.

Step 9

Step 9 image
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the two screws securing the display assembly to its right side.

Step 10

Step 10 image
Carefully lift the display, and if a narrow strip of black tape is present along the display assembly's edge, remove it with caution.
To prevent the adhesive from bonding to itself, position the tape on a surface treated with wax, such as a sheet of paper with a sticker backing.

Step 11

Step 11 image
Detach the component.Utilize three screws with a Phillips head, size #00.Access the component from the display assembly's left edge.

Step 12

Step 12 image
Using a metal spudger, carefully wedge it into the space between the two metal rails bordering the display assembly's underside. Then, pivoting the spudger, raise the LCD away from the glass.

Step 13

Step 13 image
Carefully detach the LCD from the glass assembly by gently moving the LCD panel outward, disengaging it from the ribbon cable connectors secured to the glass.

Step 14 | Front Panel

Step 14 image
Following LCD removal, the remaining components and assembly should appear as described.

Exercise caution with the heat gun during the following procedures; maintain a minimal heat level to prevent damage to the touchscreen plastics and Home button. Because the metal frame efficiently transfers heat, avoid contact with these areas to prevent burns.
Exercise extreme caution and gentleness when extracting glass pieces, particularly if the breakage occurred near the top or bottom edges. Should any glass fragments adhere to the plastic components, carefully detach them individually.
Apply warmth to the upper-left portion of the touchscreen using a heat gun or hairdryer.
Carefully pry up the left corner using your fingernails, recognizing that the touchscreen plastics are affixed to the screen with adhesive, which may require persistent effort to release.
Reapply heat with the heat gun if you encounter excessive resistance while lifting the touch screen plastics.
Apply heat again, following the same procedure, to complete the right side.

Apply heat evenly around the perimeter of the touchscreen using a heat gun.
Carefully disengage the touch screen plastics from their housing using a spudger.

Apply heat from the heat gun to the lower corner areas.
Carefully disengage the edges by gently working with your fingernails.
Carefully detach the protective plastic films applied to the touch screen surface.

Step 18

Step 18 image
Thoroughly remove the old adhesive from the front panel frame's surface to ensure proper bonding of the replacement panel.
Proper alignment and secure bonding of the adhesive are achieved through this step.

Step 19

Step 19 image

To secure the front panel plastics, apply adhesive strips specifically designed for this application, or equivalent double-sided tape, to the upper surface.
Apply firm, even pressure across the adhesive strips on the plastic frame using the flat spudger tip.
Eliminate trapped air and promote proper bonding by performing this step.

Affix the second adhesive strip, or equivalent double-sided tape, to the front panel frame, specifically at the location of the home button.
Using a spudger's flat edge, apply even pressure across the adhesive strip to secure it and eliminate any trapped air pockets.

Step 21

Step 21 image

Carefully use the spudger tip to separate the adhesive backing from each strip on the front panel plastic.
Exercise caution during removal to avoid separating the adhesive layer from its carrier; the backing is delicate and easily detached from the adhesive.

Step 22

Step 22 image

Carefully remove the adhesive backing from the interior surface of the front panel glass.
Carefully separate the home button assembly, the central glass component, and the layer beneath the ribbon cables; improper separation risks compromised adhesion and a clouded display.
To prevent fingerprints from becoming trapped within the display glass assembly, handle the interior surfaces with extreme care.

Step 23

Step 23 image

To allow access to the home button area, carefully direct the front panel's connecting wires downwards.
When joining the front panel sections, ensure the wire identified with the number 2 is positioned in the illustrated orientation.

Step 24

Step 24 image

Position the front glass so its top edge matches the front panel frame, making sure the upper cables are neatly tucked away.

Step 25

Step 25 image

Carefully join the front panel and its frame, verifying that the home button terminations match precisely.

Step 26
