iPhone 1st Generation Logic Board Replacement

All functions of the iPhone, excluding cellular calling capabilities, are managed by its motherboard.

Step 1 | SIM Card

Step 1 image
Using a SIM card eject tool or a straightened paper clip, gently push into the aperture located adjacent to the headphone jack.
Using gentle pressure, depress the paper clip to eject the SIM card tray.

Step 2

Step 2 image
Using your fingers, carefully extract the SIM card tray from the iPhone by sliding it outward.

Step 3 | Antenna Cover

Step 3 image
To detach the antenna cover, depress both upper tabs, directing them inward against the black cover, and simultaneously disengage the two catches found on its lower surface.

Step 4

Step 4 image
Carefully insert the metal spudger in the space separating the antenna cover from the dock connector, avoiding the connector's internal components.
Using a metal spudger, carefully separate the antenna cover from the silver front bezel by inserting the spudger into the space alongside the dock connector and gently lifting upward, focusing on the areas near the two tabs to establish a slight separation.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Using an iPod opening tool, gently separate the antenna cover from the front bezel, ensuring the tool's wedge faces the antenna cover.
Using the tool, maneuver it along the edge and advance it upwards until it contacts the metal support.
Perform the identical steps again for the opposite side of the dock connector.

Step 6

Step 6 image
Apply firm, even pressure while sliding the antenna cover upwards, disengaging it from the iPhone's retaining clips. Should resistance be encountered, verify the cover is fully raised to release the catches.

Step 7 | Case

Step 7 image
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the rear panel by unscrewing the three fasteners that hold it in place.

Step 8

Step 8 image
Opening the iPhone requires patience and care; allocate sufficient time for the repair process and remain calm if you encounter difficulty.
Using a dental pick, proceed to the next step by inserting it into the small, square-shaped aperture.

Step 9

Step 9 image
Carefully detach the rear panel, beginning on the side containing the control buttons.
Insert the dental pick fully into the square-shaped opening, potentially requiring slight manipulation and considerable pressure to achieve complete insertion.

Step 10

Step 10 image
To detach the rear panel, use a dental pick and apply a rapid, counterclockwise force while ensuring the pressure is directed at a 90-degree angle to the display assembly's surface; a swift movement is preferable to avoid deforming the case.

Step 11

Step 11 image
Carefully slide a spudger between the rear panel and the iPhone casing, working along the top edge and the corners to release the adhesive.

Step 12

Step 12 image
Using the same steps, perform the process on the opposite side of the iPhone; insert the dental pick fully into the rectangular opening, and be prepared to gently maneuver the tool and exert considerable pressure to ensure complete insertion.

Step 13

Step 13 image
To release the rear panel, use a dental pick and apply a swift, rotational force; ensure the force is directed at a 90-degree angle to the display assembly's surface. Rapid movement is preferable to avoid deforming the case.
Because the headphone jack cable secures the rear panel to the iPhone, avoid completely detaching it at this stage.

Step 14

Step 14 image
Prior to detaching the headphone jack cable, ensure the device is powered down.
Carefully detach the headphone jack cable connector from the logic board using a spudger.

Step 15 | Communications Board

Step 15 image
Carefully lift the adhesive orange tape to release the white antenna cable from the iPhone's side.

Step 16

Step 16 image
Carefully detach the two antenna cables from the communications board utilizing a spudger; be aware that Apple secured these connections with a minimal amount of adhesive, potentially requiring increased effort for removal.

Step 17

Step 17 image
Using the appropriate screwdriver, detach the three screws.
  • A logic board is affixed to the iPhone close to the camera by a Phillips #00 screw.
  • Secure the logic board using two Phillips #00 screws, positioning one screw at each corner.

Step 18

Step 18 image
Carefully detach the camera connector using a spudger.
Carefully extract the camera module from the iPhone, maintaining all original positioning.

Step 19

Step 19 image
Starting at the frame edge furthest from the battery connectors, use a spudger to gently separate the battery from the plastic frame; the battery is secured with adhesive and requires slow, careful prying to release.
To prevent damage, avoid fully seating the battery within its compartment; exercise caution to avoid stressing the battery's wiring, as the solder connections are fragile.

Step 20

Step 20 image
Using a spudger, gently lift the logic board a small amount from the side furthest from the battery connector; avoid excessive upward force to prevent damage to the four remaining connectors secured to its underside.

Step 21

Step 21 image
Carefully insert a spudger under the logic board, in the area previously occupied by the camera, being mindful to avoid excessive upward force because four connectors remain secured to its underside.

Step 22

Step 22 image
Carefully raise the logic board a small amount, then use a spudger to gently separate the display ribbon cable from its connector.
To release the speaker connector, advance the spudger toward the battery and the iPhone's center, following the disconnection of the initial connector.

Step 23

Step 23 image
Carefully flip the logic board over and, using a spudger, detach the touch sensor cable connector located on its underside.

Step 24

Step 24 image
Using a spudger, gently lift the black locking bar to rotate it a full 90 degrees; note that the image depicts the bar in its rotated position.

Step 25

Step 25 image
Carefully separate the battery and logic board assembly by sliding them horizontally, ensuring they move clear of the orange antenna and fully exit the iPhone's casing.

Step 26

Step 26 image
The iPhone contains two circuit boards arranged one above the other; the communications board sits atop the logic board.
Using the illustrated guide as reference, slide a spudger into the space between the metal shielding and the circuit boards. Gently leverage the spudger to release the connector's hold.

Step 27

Step 27 image
Carefully continue disjoining the two circuit boards; the aluminum shielding might resist separation. If needed, maneuver around the board's perimeter to release the shielding.
To replace the communications board, detach it from the battery by carefully desoldering the connections; refer to the battery replacement guide for assistance with battery removal.

Step 28 | Logic Board

Step 28 image
The main circuit board is still present.
