iPhone 1st Generation Case Replacement

Follow these instructions to disassemble a first-generation iPhone.

Step 1 | SIM Card

Step 1 image
Using a SIM card eject tool or a straightened paper clip, gently push into the opening located adjacent to the headphone jack.
Using gentle, consistent pressure, depress the paper clip to eject the SIM card tray.

Step 2

Step 2 image
Using your fingers, carefully eject the SIM card tray from the iPhone by sliding it outward.

Step 3 | Antenna Cover

Step 3 image
To detach the antenna cover, depress both upper tabs toward the black housing, as these secure the cover via two catches positioned on its lower surface.

Step 4

Step 4 image
Carefully insert the metal spudger in the space separating the antenna cover from the dock connector, avoiding direct insertion into the connector.
Using a metal spudger, carefully separate the antenna cover from the silver front bezel by inserting the spudger into the space beside the dock connector and gently lifting upward, focusing near the two tabs to establish a slight separation.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Using an iPod opening tool, gently separate the antenna cover from the front bezel, ensuring the tool’s wedge shape faces the antenna cover.
Using the specified tool, maneuver it along the edge and advance upward until it contacts the metal support structure.
Perform the identical steps again for the opposite side of the dock connector.

Step 6

Step 6 image
Apply firm, even pressure to both sides of the antenna cover, then move it upward to disengage it from the iPhone; additional force may be necessary, and confirm the cover is fully raised to release any retaining clips if it resists removal.

Step 7 | Case

Step 7 image
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the rear panel by unscrewing the three fasteners that hold it in place.

Step 8

Step 8 image
Opening the iPhone requires patience and care; allocate sufficient time for the process and remain calm if you encounter difficulty.
Using a dental pick, proceed to the subsequent step by inserting its tip into the small, square-shaped aperture.

Step 9

Step 9 image
Carefully detach the rear panel, beginning on the side containing the control buttons.
Insert the dental pick fully into the square-shaped opening, exercising sufficient force and potentially oscillating the tool to ensure complete insertion.

Step 10

Step 10 image
To detach the rear panel, use a dental pick and apply a swift, counterclockwise force directly outward, at a 90-degree angle to the display assembly; rapid movement is preferable to avoid deforming the case.

Step 11

Step 11 image
Carefully slide a spudger between the rear panel and the iPhone casing, working along the top edge and the corners to release the adhesive securing the panel.

Step 12

Step 12 image
Using the same steps, work on the opposite side of the iPhone; insert the dental pick fully into the rectangular opening, and be prepared to gently maneuver the tool and exert considerable pressure to ensure complete insertion.

Step 13

Step 13 image
To release the rear panel, use a dental pick and apply a swift, rotational force, turning it clockwise. Ensure the force is directed at a 90-degree angle to the display assembly's surface; a rapid movement is preferable to avoid deforming the case.
Because the headphone jack cable secures the rear panel to the iPhone, avoid completely detaching it at this stage.

Step 14

Step 14 image
Prior to detaching the headphone jack cable, ensure the device is powered down.
Carefully detach the headphone jack cable connector from the logic board using a spudger.
